Suburban Bangor homes surrounded by greenery
New Englander, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes built in the early to mid-1900s make up a majority of the market here. “There are also some pockets in the neighborhood with newer, more modern homes, but a majority have that classic New England architecture,” Spear says. Residences often take up most of the lot but still allow room for driveways, garages and even space for gardens and plants to liven up the front yard. Houses are also partially shaded by the mature maple and oak trees that dot the Bangor landscape. Two- to three-bedroom homes can cost between $150,000 and $350,000, and four- to five-bedroom homes can cost between $350,000 and $550,000.The Bangor Municipal Golf Course and Fairmount Park
The Bangor Municipal Golf Course is one of the primary sources of recreation for Fairmount residents. The course offers 27 holes for all abilities, a driving range, practice greens and a number of lessons and programs for members and non-members alike. Fairmount Park is only a couple blocks from the golf course and has a half-basketball court next to a modern playset and walking paths that cut through wide-open green spaces. “I take my dog there all the time to play,” Spear says. “You can’t go there on days with good weather without having some company as others enjoy the park.” Residents are also a short walk from Bass Park and the Bangor Raceway, which hosts horse races and events like the annual Bangor State Fair.Bangor Public Schools just outside the neighborhood
Students in kindergarten through third grade can attend the Fourteenth Street School, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche. They can then head to the Fairmount School for grades four and five, which receives a B rating, before continuing to the James F. Doughty School, which earns a B-minus. The final stop for many students is the B-plus-rated Bangor High School. The high school, among other recognitions, has received the National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence award five times. Families can also choose private options for high school, such as the A-rated John Bapst Memorial High School.
Bass Park and Bangor events
Residents are a short trip from annual downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. A tradition since 1849, the fair is one of the oldest in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is jam-packed with events and activities such as carnival rides, demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Downtown is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater and Cross Insurance Center, two popular venues that host concerts and other events.Walking or driving to downtown Bangor
The Fairmount neighborhood is a bustling area for commuters. Hammond Street, Interstates 95 and 395 border the neighborhood's northern, western and southern borders, respectively. These roads provide streamlined access to nearby towns and cities and can create a lot of noise but are often not congested. Many residential streets also sport sidewalks, making it easy for residents to walk to the Penobscot River or the golf course. “You often see tons of foot traffic on Hammond Street. Bangor International Airport is 3 miles to the northwest, and St. Joseph Hospital is 2 miles away along Broadway.Brewer and Bangor dining options
Fairmount residents are a short walk from downtown Bangor, home to numerous shopping and dining options like Paddy Murphys. The pub sits in the heart of downtown and offers classic fare and pool tables that are especially popular on the weekends. Residents can also head to Harvest Moon Deli, a sandwich shop with unique names for their dishes, like “breaking the slaw” and “feel like bacon love.” Additional dining options can be found across the river in Brewer, from lobster rolls at High Tide Restaurant and Bar to craft beers and pepperoni pizzas at Mason's Brewing Company. “Mason’s has just blown up. The owner, Chris, has built a fantastic business,” Spear says. Residents can head to the local Shaw's along Main Street for groceries and daily necessities or to the nearby Bangor Farmers’ Market every Sunday. The neighborhood is also home to Cornerstone Barber Shop, which has been a community staple since its opening over 70 years ago. “Brock is the only guy I will let touch my hair,” Spear says.
