West Bangor merges history, recreation and industry

A mixed-use community in the southwest corner of Bangor, West Bangor blends residential charm and industrial grit. The area includes vintage homes, industrial spaces, and pockets of rural farmland, creating a landscape that feels both lived-in and expansive. The community is anchored by the historic Whitney Park Historic District, a residential enclave known for its preserved homes. And just east, the downtown waterfront district stretches along the Penobscot River, offering scenic views and opportunities for boating and riverside strolls. “The downtown area is very historic and walkable, with trails overlooking the river,” says Karissa Hatch, Recreation Coordinator with Bangor Parks and Recreation. “A lot of extracurriculars happen there, like food trucks and amphitheater crowds in the summer months. You get that city lifestyle with bars and restaurants.” Away from the riverfront, the University of Maine at Augusta, Bangor campus adds an academic pulse, and Hayford Park provides recreational space. Bangor International Airport also sits within the neighborhood, and Interstate 95 intersects with U.S. Route 2 just outside the airstrip.

Hayford Park provides indoor and outdoor activities

Outdoor recreation centers around Hayford Park, which features Mansfield Stadium – the home field for Bangor High School and the Senior League – as well as a playground, skatepark, athletic courts, and a resort-style community pool complete with water slides. The park also includes an indoor hockey rink, making it a year-round hub for activities. “Hayford Park is on a heavily traveled road from downtown to the airport and the more rural areas,” Hatch says. “The Beth Pancoe Aquatic Center has tons of programs from swim lessons to aqua Zumba. And Sawyer Arena is the only ice arena in Bangor, providing space for skate programs.” About 10 blocks away, the public Bangor Municipal Golf Course offers a 27-hole layout.

Hatch notes that the parks department is currently getting approved for a new sports facility on the other side of Bangor. “It’ll be about 10 miles from the current location,” she says. “The recreation department services the families and children in the more rural areas, too.” The process is still in the beginning phases, but the new location will provide more space.

An array of Colonial styles line walkable streets

West Bangor’s residential sections primarily feature ranch-styles, Cape Cods and Colonial-style homes on cozy, manicured lots with driveways and detached garages. Sidewalks line most streets, making the area pedestrian friendly. Centrally located, the Whitney Park Historic District showcases ornate Colonial- and Victorian-style properties built in the late 1800s to early 1900s, many renovated to reflect more modern details but also preserved in vintage appeal. These homes can sit on up to a half-acre, which is more space than surrounding residences. While sizes vary from slightly more than 1,000 to over 2,500 square feet, price tags for move-in ready houses span between $175,000 and $450,000. The neighborhood is renter-friendly, as 60% of residents rent their homes. Investors can find older Colonial-inspired homes in need of major repairs for $40,000 to $150,000.
