A peaceful residential community close to the Bangor waterfront
Overlooking Main Street and the Penobscot River is the peaceful neighborhood of West Side Village, populated by charming New England homes and leafy Red Maple trees. The neighborhood is located in Bangor, Maine, a small city known for its origins in the lumber and shipbuilding industry. Marty Beliveau, a lifelong Maine resident, says “Even though Bangor is considered a city, it hardly feels like one. But I think that’s what residents like about it: It has that small-town charm, but you still have stuff to do.” West Side Village is right next to Downtown Bangor — an area with quaint brick buildings lining the streets, housing local businesses such as coffee shops and bookstores. The neighborhood also straddles Route 100 and Main Street, allowing residents to commute to other parts of town easily. “There’s a lot to appreciate,” says James Spear, a Bangor resident and Realtor at RE/MAX. “You’re right next to the waterfront, which plays a huge role in everyday life: There are cruise ships that dock here, and you can even watch concerts on the water. Overall, I would say it’s a small town that offers more than you'd think!”

Living in homes inspired by New England architecture
The homes in this area take influence from classic New England architecture. Modest Victorians and colonial-inspired designs are some of the most common styles, along with the occasional ranch-style home. Houses near Main Street and Downtown Bangor sit closely together with small plots of green space. When moving farther out, lot sizes increase, since they are further from the city's center. Some parts of the neighborhood have sidewalks which residents bike or walk on. "The majority of homes in this area lean on the older and more historic side — anything built after 2000 would be further out from here,” notes Spear. “If someone moves here, they’re really looking to settle down.” Prices start at $200,000 for ranch-style homes and can reach up to $750,000 for large Victorian properties.
West Side Village offers a variety of homes of all sizes.

Spending the day at Brass Park
Talbot Park, formerly known as Second Street Park, is within the neighborhood, but most people head to Bass Park for a full day of activities. The park has been around since the early 1800s, offering amenities such as a playground, sports fields, and most notably, its horse-racking track. The park also hosts the Bangor State Fair, which takes place every July during the summer. When the State Fair isn’t happening, residents often come by to watch horse-racing matches or eat lunch on the greenery. Those looking to test their swing may also head to the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, located right next to Bass Park. This 27-hole golf course is open to the general public for anyone to enjoy.

Shopping and dining in Downtown Bangor
A highlight of West Side Village is its proximity to Downtown Bangor, which has some of the best shopping and dining options in the area. “It’s super cute, a bunch of fun bars and restaurants, and has a high walkability score,” says Spear. He personally recommends Paddy Murphys, an Irish pub serving bar food and beer, for a fun night out with friends. “It’s definitely one of the spots we hit for the night.” Spear also recommends Frank’s Bake Shop & Catering, which he says, “everyone visits for a breakfast sandwich or any sort of pastry.” Groceries are available at chains such as Shaw’s Supermarket on Main Street.
Just on the border of West Side Village residents can find a multitude of retail.

Travel by car, bus or plane
West Side Village borders three major roads: Route 100, Interstate 395 and Main Street, allowing residents to easily travel in and out of the neighborhood. “You can quickly get in and out of downtown within a few minutes,” says Spear. “That’s what's nice about being in a small city — we essentially have no traffic. If you have to wait 10 minutes, that would be considered a really bad day.” Public transportation options include the Community Connector Transit System, a series of bus stops that vary by schedule. Frequent flyers will be happy to know that the Bangor International Airport is less than a 4-mile drive away.
