Like many other communities in Johnson County, Bargersville has been consistently growing. And because this former farm town has so much room to stretch its proverbial legs, that growth has been intense. According to a 2023 U.S. Census estimate, more than 11,000 people call Bargersville home – more than double its population in 2010 and nearly triple the population in 2000. The motto on the sign welcoming visitors to Bargersville sums up the situation succinctly: “A Growing Community Rooted in Agriculture.”

Mid-century homes in Old Bargersville and newer neighborhoods cater to different homebuyers
Though the median sales price in Bargersville is around $425,000, most houses are either well below or well above that figure.
In the section of town known as Old Bargersville, where homes were generally built before 1970, affordability is the draw. "Bargersville has enjoyed a huge leap in growth due to the rising home prices in Greenwood and other nearby areas," says Susan Forrest, Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis. Bungalows and ranch-style homes in and around Old Bargersville range between $180,000 and $360,000.
In the newer subdivisions, like on the north side of town where many homes were built after 2000, floorplans that exceed 4,000 square feet are the appeal. New Traditional custom houses start around $500,000 and some sell for more than $1 million.

Center Grove schools earn high marks
Center Grove Community School Corporation earns an A from Niche, which also ranks it the best of Johnson County's six districts. Two elementary schools, Maple Grove and Walnut Grove, are located in Bargersville, while the rest are elsewhere in Center Grove Township. Because the township covers such a large area, Center Grove High School has more than 2,800 students enrolled. Center Grove’s two show choirs won their divisions at the 2024 Show Choir Nationals, and the football program has won five state championships since 2008.

State Road 135 provides access to major distribution centers on Indy's south side
Bargersville is 22 miles south of downtown Indianapolis via State Road 135, which runs through the heart of town. But its growth has much to do with what’s happening elsewhere in Johnson County. “The south side of Indianapolis has created an abundance of jobs with the warehousing and Amazon putting the bulk of their facilities in the Greenwood area,” says Rollin Jackson, an Indy real estate broker since 1960. “And there are two more giant warehouses down in Franklin.” Those warehouses are within 15 miles of Bargersville, usually equating to a drive of 25 minutes or less.
The recently completed Interstate 69, which connects Indianapolis and Bloomington, runs just west of town and lends to the possibility of continued future growth. Indianapolis International Airport is less than 25 miles from Bargersville, with I-69 expediting the drive.
Taxman Brewing, Mallow Run Winery reflect town's growth
A cluster of grain silos near the railroad tracks serves as Bargersville’s skyline and an unmistakable reminder of its roots. While its downtown area is limited in size, more dining options have arrived due to the town’s increase in population. Taxman Brewing Company and Gastropub, which opened in a renovated general store building in 2013, has grown into a local economic force with three Indianapolis-area locations. Mallow Run Winery is another draw with live music and events, located about 5 miles out of town with a tasting room set in an 1870s barn.

Two golf courses are just outside of Bargersville. Downtown Indianapolis is visible from Bluff Creek’s elevated 10th tee, and Hickory Stick is an Irish links-style course unique to the area.

Death and Taxes Day, a celebration of the end of tax season
Taxman Brewing leans into its name by hosting one of Bargersville's biggest events, Death and Taxes Day, on the first Saturday following Tax Day. Nearly 50 Indiana breweries, cideries and wineries participate in the festival, and Taxman brews Deadline, a Belgian-style stout for the annual occasion.
The Bargersville Harvest Moon Fall Festival is an annual civic celebration featuring a parade, car show and live music. The Santa Train and Holiday Market is the town's holiday kickoff, with Santa arriving downtown via train on the first Friday in December.
Many Bargersville events will take place at the newly constructed Umbarger Plaza.

Crime well below the national average

Like the rest of Central Indiana, Bargersville's seasons range from winter days that can get cold and snowy to summer days that can be hot and muggy.
