The Centerville neighborhood is a historic Massachusetts village

Centerville is a coastal village of the town of Barnstable in western Cape Cod. Framed to the north by Massachusetts Route 6 and to the south by Craigville Beach, the neighborhood is a destination for classic New England living along Nantucket Sound. “Centerville is a village; it’s more family-oriented and a historic neighborhood,” says Shane Masaschi, a broker associate with Compass Real Estate and treasurer of the peninsula’s Chatham Merchants Association. The Centerville Historic District is in the heart of the neighborhood, consisting of landmarks like 1800s-era homes and a nearly-200-year-old general store. Between the coastal beaches, the historic district and Route 6, Centerville offers commuter convenience and New England charm in Cape Cod.

Ranch-style and Cape Cod homes in Centerville

Centerville is largely residential, with some waterfront homes around Wequaquet Lake. Ranch-style homes and Cape Cods are the most common architectural styles in Centerville. Older homes can date as far back as the 19th century, but most were built after 1950. Prices typically range between $500,000 and $1 million, though waterfront homes can cost over $1 million.

Education within Barnstable Public Schools

Barnstable Public Schools earns a B from Niche and serves the Centerville area. Centerville Elementary School receives a B-plus and enrolls kindergarten through third grade, and Barnstable United Elementary School has a C-plus for grades 4 and 5. Barnstable Intermediate School gets a B-minus and spans sixth and seventh grades. Barnstable High School receives a B. In 2025, almost 40 Barnstable High students were recognized by the BigFuture National Recognition Program for high-achieving academic designations like GPA and test scores.

Residents have coastal recreation opportunities in Centerville

Centerville’s south side lies along Nantucket Sound, where beaches line the coast. “Centerville’s premier beach is Craigville Beach, which is probably one of the best beaches on Cape Cod,” Masaschi says. “It’s a Nantucket Sound beach and it is very sought-after—people will come from out of town and out of the area to go to it.” Long Beach and Covell’s Beach are also along the waterfront. Wequaquet Lake and Long Pond are both popular for boating, fishing and swimming in Centerville. Lumbert Pond offers around a mile of trails, and Bearse Pond Wildlife Management Area allows hiking and hunting. Patterson Playground has play equipment.

Traversing Cape Cod on two major routes

Massachusetts Route 6 serves as the peninsula’s primary thoroughfare, running along the north boundary of Centerville. Chatham Village is less than 25 miles away at the east end of Cape Cod. Boston is around 70 miles northwest. State Route 28 runs through the middle of Centerville and is lined with bus stops for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. “The bus transportation service across the Cape covers all 15 towns,” Masaschi says, “but most people get here by car.” The Sagamore and Bourne Bridges link Cape Cod to the mainland. Cape Cod Gateway Airport is less than 5 miles east and Boston Logan International Airport sits around 70 miles away. Cape Cod Hospital offers medical care about 5 miles east.

Local Cape Cod restaurants serve a variety of food

Most nearby restaurants are located in and around the north side of Centerville. Along Massachusetts Route 28, the Centerville Food Mart / Sushi Bar offers outdoor seating. Bobby Byrne’s Restaurant & Pub and the Centerville Pie Company sit in either direction down the road. Along Iyannough Road, Marylou’s Coffee is a local favorite close to Cape Cod Beer, which serves drinks alongside food from local spots and food trucks. Farther south, Four Seas Ice Cream has been serving frozen treats in Centerville for over 90 years. “Four Seas Ice Cream is really well-known up there,” Masaschi says. The 1856 Country Store is nearly 200 years old and stocks unique items like penny candy and a Cape Cod-themed Monopoly game in the historic district.

Less than 5 miles east of Centerville in Hyannis , the Cape Cod Mall has stores like Target, Macy’s and Marshalls, as well as a Regal Cinemas theater. The mall is close to both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods for grocery shoppers. “Hyannis is where the urban vibe is, like nightlife,” Masaschi says. “You also have the boats to the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket , but there are more restaurants, nightlife and everything in Hyannis.”

Seasonal events in nearby Hyannis

Hyannis is home to major events. Twice a year, Hyannis Open Streets features live music, vendors, games and more. The Hyannis Main Street Holiday Stroll takes place the first weekend of December and features Santa rolling in on an antique fire truck, live music and trolley rides. Other events include Small Business Saturday and Safe Trick-or-Treating.
