East Barre
Shopping for antiques and flannel
Though most folks head 4 miles to Barre City for locally-owned shops and restaurants, they may shop at a few establishments closer to home in East Barre – especially if they’re looking for vintage finds. Culver is the co-owner of Last Time Around Antiques and Collectibles, which offers a constantly changing variety of quality furniture and antiques dating from the 1800s to the early 1900s. “I have a lot of furniture from the 1950s and before, all made of wood and high quality,” Culver says. “Locals support me the most. I’ve been in the business over 30 years and now I’m starting to get their kids.” Apart from regulars, Culver notes that tourists coming through the neighborhood also make up his customer base. “The foliage of Vermont always brings people in,” he says. Another antique shop, East Barre Antique Mall, is in a wood-paneled building on Mill Street and sells pre-loved items and unique merchandise, such as dishware, clocks, furniture and additional collectibles. Across the street, Vermont Flannel Company operates its flagship Factory Store, which displays an array of 100% cotton flannel clothing and gifts made in the USA.In Barre City, Espresso Bueno is a go-to for a cup of Joe, while Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen serves craft beers in a casual gastropub setting down the street. For groceries, Quality Market and AR Market stock produce and pantry items in Barre, and a Hannaford in South Barre is about 3 miles west of East Barre. Dollar General provides other necessities closer to home. Additional supermarkets and big-box retailers, such as T.J. Maxx, are in the Central Plaza Shopping Center in Berlin, about 7 miles away.
A mix of vernacular styles on larger properties
East Barre’s residential streets, which branch out from Mill Street, feature a mix of architectural home styles. Minimalistic split-level and ranch-style houses, ranging in price from $150,000 to $300,000, sit alongside colonial-inspired homes and vernacular styles with gable-fronted roofs. Some have Victorian and farmhouse influences, with decorative trim and wrap-around porches. These colonial and vernacular-style single-family homes can cost from $260,000 to up to $765,000 for more contemporary examples. As streets get more rural, properties tend to get larger; Cape-style cabins and farmhouse-inspired homes that list between $350,000 and $680,000 can sit on lots as big as 5 acres further south in the neighborhood.Farm-to-table education at Barre Unified Union schools
Students in East Barre are part of the Barre Unified Union School District, which serves Barre Town and Barre City. Kids may start their education at Barre Town Middle and Elementary School for prekindergarten through eighth grade. Earning a C-plus from Niche, the joint elementary and middle school offers a Crops by Kids project, an initiative that promotes healthy, natural food options while teaching kids about growing food in the school’s garden. This farm-to-table education continues into high school; students at Spaulding Educational Alternatives (SEA) take part in project-based learning through Vermont’s Farm-to-School program. An offshoot of the B-minus-graded Spaulding High School, SEA promotes sustainable agriculture and the importance of local farms.Aldrich Public Library’s slew of local events
The York Branch of the Aldrich Public Library’s building is an unassuming single-family-style home on Mill Street, yet the establishment serves as a vibrant community gathering spot. Apart from offering stacked shelves of books and resources, the library hosts various year-round events, including author meet and greets and book discussion groups. Recurring adult programs include a knitting group, genealogy group and the Senior Day Series, which occurs the first Wednesday in April through December and features demonstrations, concerts and presentations. In Barre City, the B.O.R. Ice Arena and adjacent Barre City Auditorium also host an array of events, including concerts and sporting events, including Spaulding High athletic games. The Ice and Turf arena is also open seasonally for public skating and figure skating.
Scenic trails around East Barre’s natural quarries
Central Vermont’s natural setting offers a verdant landscape conducive to outdoor recreation like hiking and birdwatching. Barre is known for its enormous quarry sites, and Millstone Hill in East Barre provides a look into the Barre Medium Quarry, a 50-foot-deep quarry established in 1906 for its medium-colored granite that is now a historic landmark. Trails wrap around the quarry at Millstone Hill, offering a unique perspective of the natural stone alongside reflective ponds and dense forests. The East Barre Park and Playground provides a recreational respite for residents at the center of the neighborhood, while the Barre Town Recreational Area has athletic facilities like basketball and tennis courts just a few miles away. The recreation area is also home to the Town of Barre Community Dog Park and the Barre Recreational Skate Park.
Route 302 to Montpelier and Burlington
Route 302 is the main thoroughfare that runs through the north of East Barre, connecting to Barre City and further west to Montpelier. Interstate 89 is about 8 miles away from the neighborhood. Burlington and the Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport are about 50 miles away via Interstate 89.Flooding risk in Barre
The greater Barre area is prone to flooding, with levels reaching over 3 feet during the spring when heavy rainfall and runoff occur. “The biggest thing with East Barre is it’s on higher ground,” Culver says, explaining that residents opt for East Barre over other neighborhoods. “I had a cellar and basement in Downtown Barre that was often wet with big rainstorms. When I had the chance to move, I took it.” Though East Barre sits higher than the rest of Barre Town and Barre City, areas of the neighborhood are still at risk of flooding. Depending on zoning, homebuyers in East Barre may be required to purchase flood insurance.
