Alfred Drowne is a historic neighborhood with coastal charm
Nestled about 10 miles south of Providence, the Alfred Drowne neighborhood is a quiet, historic residential district in Barrington. “It’s a stunning neighborhood,” says Jean Bellm, Barrington's Director of Recreation. “It’s nice and lively.” Developed between 1860 and 1910, the area was once farmland owned by Alfred Drown, whose circa 1830 farmhouse still stands on Alfred Drowne Road. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, the neighborhood features a mix of architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its western edge borders Narragansett Bay, offering residents access to coastal views and estuarine breezes that connect to the Atlantic. With a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4, the area is considered one of the safest in the region.
19th and 20th century homes provide housing variety
The housing landscape in Alfred Drowne reflects its historic roots and coastal charm. As most homes were built in the late 1800s, the area features styles popular at the turn of the 20th century, including Cape Cods, Greek Revivals, Italianate, Queen Anne and Victorian Vernacular designs. Most residences have driveways and garages, and while there are no sidewalks, the quiet, tree-lined streets remain walkable. About 80% of residents own their homes, with single-family properties ranging from modest cottages around $560,000 to expansive properties near Echo Lake or the coast priced up to $1.8 million. At the neighborhood’s northern tip, Bay Spring Crossing offers condominium living, with two-bedroom, two-bath units selling between $395,000 and $460,000. Homes closer to the shoreline or estuarine areas may face higher flood risks.
Set quietly among residential homes, Saints Matthew and Mark Episcopal Church blends into the neighborhood’s rhythm; if not for its Queen Anne-style turret, it might go unnoticed. Its historic architecture adds character to Alfred Drowne’s streetscape.
A-rated Barrington Public Schools serve neighborhood students
Local students are part of Barrington Public Schools, rated A-plus by Niche and ranked as the No. 1 school district in Rhode Island. The path begins at Nayatt School for kindergarten through third grade, followed by Hampden Meadows School for fourth and fifth, Barrington Middle School and Barrington High School. All four schools receive an A rating. Barrington High offers a wide range of student clubs, including niche groups like the Dodo Club and SOUL Buddies Animal Therapy Club.
Bellm also mentions Barrington Farm School, a nonprofit community farm on Alfred Drowne’s east side that caters to local students. “From toddlers to seniors, they teach you how to grow veggies and honey. Residents got together and bought the land; it’s all from donations. We have very generous people here,” she says.
Latham Park and local country club offer outdoor recreation
Outdoor recreation for Alfred Drowne residents consists of a mix of coastal and community spaces. On the north side, Latham Park serves as both a boat harbor and a park with a playground and lawn that hosts a free summer concert series each Sunday from July through August. Toward the south, Mussachuck Grove and Beach features a wooded trail that opens onto the sandy shores of Narragansett Bay. Nearby, members of Rhode Island Country Club can access an 18-hole golf course, clay tennis courts, heated pools and a restaurant with event space. For cyclists, the East Bay Bike Path runs along the eastern edge of the neighborhood, offering 14.5 miles of scenic riding through the area’s coastal and wooded landscapes. “We have a team working on creating better trails and bike routes. We’re trying to open more space and use it wisely,” Bellm says. “We actually have the largest bike-to-school population in all of Rhode Island.”
Nearby dining includes Italian, sushi, Mexican and Thai
While the neighborhood itself doesn’t have dining or retail options, residents are just 2 miles from a bustling commercial area along state Route 114. This nearby pocket offers a variety of restaurants, including Italian fare at Viola Cucina, sushi at Miku, Mexican dishes at Nacho Mamma’s and Thai cuisine at The Boss. There are also cafes and bakeries like Vienna Bakery, known for European pastries, and Bagels Etc, which serves bagels, donuts and sandwiches. For groceries, Shaw’s provides everyday essentials.
Route 114 connects residents to Providence and I-195
Quiet residential lanes connect locals to state Route 114, about 2 miles east, which leads directly into Providence or northward to Interstate 195, roughly 5 miles away. For medical care, residents rely on Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, a general hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center. Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is located about 18 miles away on the opposite side of Narragansett Bay.
