Barron draws buyers with its public parks and lower cost of living

Barron is a small Wisconsin community known for affordable housing and a mix of recreation, all about 13 miles from the larger city of Rice Lake. “It’s a big draw for hunters and people who want access to county lands. Another thing people move there for is a beautiful community center that has a pool, walking track and lots of physical fitness features,” says Cathy Hansen, an owner and broker with Associated Realty LLC who has over 30 years of experience. “I think people get a little bit of a better buy for their buck than in Rice Lake.” As the seat of Barron County, the town is also home to the sheriff’s office, circuit court and other county departments, and Jennie-O Turkey Store has a large manufacturing plant in the center of town, providing plenty of jobs.

Vintage home sand spacious lots shape Barron’s housing mix

Early 20th-century cottages and midcentury ranch-style homes are the dominant styles in Barron. “It’s representative of the older logging communities, and there are some beautiful homes that were built during those days,” Hansen says. In addition to the vintage cottages, some elaborate Victorian homes sit along the downtown streets. The city has a suburban feel, with sidewalks next to tall, leafy trees planted in front yards. Rural areas outside the city include vast fields and farms along with homes on spacious properties. Homes typically cost between $100,000 and $420,000.
