An established Baton Rouge neighborhood close to downtown
Key to the appeal of the expansive Airline/Jefferson neighborhood is its central location. Just eight miles from Downtown Baton Rouge, the area provides residents with easy access to the city, great recreation options and fantastic dining choices. The city is also centrally located within Louisiana; it's as convenient to New Orleans as it is to Lafayette or Natchitoches. “It’s in the center of Baton Rouge,” says Heather Kirkpatrick, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Premier Partners. “There’s new construction surrounded by houses from 30 to 50 years ago. So, it’s a more established area.” It's also part of East Baton Rouge Parish, the most populous parish in the state.
Home styles include condos, cottages and Acadian houses
Homes are a mix of ages and styles. Condos, apartments and townhouses sit beside single-family homes with beautiful lawns with varying lot sizes. Modern houses mingle with cottages, French Provincials and ranch styles as well as Acadian homes with their sloping rooflines and large front porches. Condo prices range from $75,000 for a one-bedroom to $153,000 for a newer, two-bedroom unit. Ranch-style homes are selling from a low of $169,000 up to about $300,000. Two-story houses, new builds and large custom homes, many in the southeast corner of the neighborhood, range from $285,000 up to nearly $800,000.
Indulge in the flavors of Italy at Ruffino’s
Ruffino’s Restaurant has delighted customers for more than 20 years with dishes like Shrimp Sorrento, Steak Oscar and hand-pulled mozzarella. Owned by Ruffin Rodrique, the restaurant welcomes guests with open arms and abundant tables. Bay Leaf Indian Cuisine is known for its lively yet sophisticated atmosphere, and each dish is prepared for maximum flavor and freshness. The lengthy menu includes Shrimp Bhuna and Malabar Curry. Calvin’s Bocage Market sells meat and produce, and its deli offers everything from chicken salad (delicious!) to crawfish etouffee to sushi.
Celebrate birthdays at Topgolf and Skate Galaxy
The Topgolf sports complex is open year-round and offers more than 70 climate-controlled hitting bays with large-screen televisions. Players can bring their own golf clubs or use the facility’s equipment. The complex also has a rooftop terrace with fire pits, a 28-foot video wall and private event spaces. The restaurant serves twists on classic American food. Skate Galaxy has a large roller-skating rink along with a laser-tag area, a pro shop, a soft play area for little ones and R&B and retro-music skate nights. There’s plenty of room for a birthday party here too.
The Sparkling Diamonds give it their all at Westminster Elementary
The Airline/Jefferson area is served by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Children here may attend public, private or charter schools. Westminster Elementary School is a public school known for its active sports and social clubs, including the Sparkling Diamonds Dance Team. The school was awarded a grade of C by Niche. Westdale Middle School also earned a C. The Junior ROTC program’s rifle and drill teams at Tara High School have won numerous awards. Niche gives Tara High an overall score of D+.
Go fly a kite at 11-acre Jefferson Terrace Park
The Airline/Jefferson area is dotted with small green spaces. Popular Jefferson Terrace Park has plenty of room for outdoor recreation, from potato sack races to kite flying. There’s also a lighted multipurpose ball field for pickup games or tournament play, as well as an outdoor fitness station and playground. A rentable pavilion provides shade for birthday parties and special events, while tennis and pickleball courts and a walking track round out the amenities.
It’s 85 miles to the Big Easy
Airline/Jefferson is tucked at the junction of I-10 and I-12 about eight miles east of Baton Rouge. New Orleans is 85 miles southeast of Airline/Jefferson via the I-10. Lafayette is 60 miles west, also via the I-10.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
