Downtown access and residential charm in Central Battle Creek

Encompassing part of downtown, Central Battle Creek has quick access to dining and entertainment while remaining residential. Some homes may be within walking distance of the business district. As the birthplace of Kellogg, Battle Creek is known as Cereal City. The welcome center even contains an exhibit on the history of cereal. The neighborhood is also home to the Kellogg Arena. “What used to be McCamly Plaza was purchased by Hilton and became a DoubleTree," says Morgan Damron-Patterson, a broker with RE/MAX Perrett Associates who sells throughout the city. "It's a big hotel with restaurants, and it connects to the Kellogg Arena. The stadium doesn't hold massive events but has hosted the USA Wrestling State Finals and some concerts."

Gridded blocks of bungalows, ranch-style and two-story homes

The neighborhood has a mix of styles, including bungalows, ranch-style homes and two-story houses with traditional architecture. Most homes sit close together on gridded sidewalk-lined streets that are shaded by leafy trees in the summer. Prices range from $20,000 to about $290,000 and are often dependent on whether the home needs renovations or if it was recently updated. The majority of houses were built between the early 1900s and the 1970s, with a handful of early 2000s builds. Homes tend to stay on the market for an average of 18 days, longer than the national average of 52 days.

Zoning and transfer options shape where students attend

School zones are determined by streets, and homebuyers should confirm zoning before purchasing a home. Battle Creek Public Schools also offers in-district transfers. Some students can attend LaMora Park, which earns a C grade on Niche, for kindergarten through second grade and C-minus-rated Ann J. Kellogg for Grades 3 and 5. Those living in the upper section of the neighborhood can attend C-rated Valley View Elementary instead. Springfield Middle serves 6th through 8th grade and has a score of C-minus.

All students are zoned for C-rated Battle Creek Central High School, which offers career academies like the nursing and health care program. High schoolers can also apply to attend the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center, which does not currently have a rating on Niche. B-plus rated Battle Creek Academy is a K-12 private Adventist school.

Parks offer sports courts, sledding hills and picnic space

Central Battle Creek has a handful of neighborhood parks. The largest is McCrae Park, which has plenty of space for a baseball, basketball or tennis game. Meachem Park is smaller but has a playground and hills for sledding in the winter. Prospect Park is a piece of undeveloped land that’s open to the public for picnics or tossing a ball around. The North Branch of the Kalamazoo River flows into Lower Mill Pond, where anglers can fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Hockey players and figure skaters are welcome year-round at The Rink Battle Creek, but Flash Flood Waterpark is only open seasonally from May to September.

Locally owned cafes and dessert spots add downtown flavor

In downtown Battle Creek, there are a variety of local eateries. Some have unique menus, including Load A Spud‘s potato bar with options like pulled pork spud. Barista Blues Cafe takes inspiration from Italy and Greenwich Village. “People who work from home go there and work while grabbing a sandwich," Damron-Patterson says. "There's also a dessert place downtown called Simply Sensational Berries. They have a grab-and-go cooler with these great strawberry cheesecake shooters." The neighborhood is about a mile or so from Dollar General, Aldi and Family Fare Supermarkets.
