Public park and private country club amenities serve locals

In Minges Brook Riverside, residents have a public lakeside park, the choice of country club amenities and quick access to shopping off Interstate 94. The area has a range of housing styles and prices. “The further north you go, it’s relatively inexpensive, and as you go south of the country club and into the Meadow Drive area, it gets more expensive," says Kaciana Champlin, RE/Max Perrett Associates, who was born and raised in Battle Creek. The neighborhood is named after the two schools: Riverside Elementary and Minges Brook Elementary.

Well-kept lawns and tree-lined streets with diverse housing

Ranch-style, raised Ranch-style and Split-level homes are typical in Minges Brook Riverside. On average, homes are just under 2,000 square feet, which is on par with the national average. The area is primarily residential, with well-maintained lawns adorned with full trees and bushes. Lots tend to be just under half an acre, and homes by the country club may have lake views. Prices range from $115,000 to $760,000. “Homes in the Country Club Hills area are around $350,000,” Champlin says. “The houses are much bigger there.” Condos in the Village at Ashton Lake Subdivision start at $240,000 and go up to $255,000.

Riverside and Minges Brook elementary schools serve the area

Minges Brook Riverside is zoned for Lakeview School District. Typically, students living above Country Club Drive can attend Riverside Elementary School, which earns a B-plus on Niche. “Riverside is the bigger school,” Champlin says. “It has a bigger park with a walking trail and basketball courts.” Those living below Country Club Drive may attend B-rated Minges Brook Elementary. They can then graduate to Lakeview Middle, receiving a C-plus grade. Lakeview High has a B-plus rating and is part of the Legacy Scholars program, where students may be eligible for paid tuition, fees and books at Kellogg Community College.

Residents enjoy fitness, nature and water activities nearby

Located by the elementary school of the same name, Riverside Park offers sports fields and courts. “Anyone in the area who takes dogs for a walk or anything active uses that park,” Champlin says. “The fields are irrigated, so it’s very nice.” Battle Creek Country Club has several amenities, including golf, tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness center and lake access. Riverside Golf Club and Banquet Center is another option for teeing off. Goguac Lake is also accessible from the sandy shores of Willard Beach Park, which charges $2 per individual or $5 per vehicle.

Shopping and dining centers line I-94 and Columbia Avenue

Most of the shopping and dining in the area is along Interstate 94 and East Columbia Avenue. Finley’s Grill & Smokehouse has served barbecue in Battle Creek for over 40 years. Tony’s Hong Kong has lunch and dinner buffets, while Fiesta Mexicana Mexican Cantina and Restaurant brings a taste of Mexico to Michigan. Part of a large commercial area off the interstate, Lakeview Square Mall is anchored by Horrocks grocery store and a movie theater. There are several other shopping plazas in the region, including Minges Brook Mall with a Target and CVS.

Commute-friendly location with below-average crime score

Minges Brook Riverside is a car-dependent area, but the city of Battle Creek has public buses and a downtown Amtrak and Greyhound bus station. On Interstate 94, Chicago is around 170 miles to the west, and Detroit is about 125 miles to the east. Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is about 22 miles west, a drive that will take about 25 minutes in usual traffic. The neighborhood has a Cap Index crime score of 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
