Post Franklin blends industrial roots with civic landmarks
Post Franklin is one of the more historic and industrial areas of Battle Creek because of the Kellogg and Post factories. "Most people would call the area Post Addition because it’s the neighborhood south of the addition to the Post Factory,” says Kaciana Champlin, RE/Max Perrett Associates, who was born and raised in Battle Creek. "Affordability is a big thing there. It’s one of the more affordable areas.” The neighborhood is the location of Battle Creek City Hall and other government buildings. Oak Hill Cemetery is home to the gravesites of Abolitionist Sojourner Truth and cereal moguls W.K. Kellogg and C.W. Post.

Dense streets with Victorian-style architecture and postwar homes
"It’s a relatively older housing stock. A lot of it is from the 1940s and 1950s,” Champlin says. “There are some investments in that area, new rentals and house flipping.” There are also many homes from the early 1900s, some featuring Victorian-style architecture. Prices range from around $30,000 to $165,000. Properties tend to sit close together — on average, lots are a tenth of an acre. At just over 1,500 square feet, the neighborhood’s average square footage is below the national average of nearly 2,000 square feet. About half of the residents of Post Franklin are renters.

There are a few chain eateries in the area, like Sir Pizza, and Champlin notes that locally owned establishments are popular. “There’s not much of a commercial area, but the neighborhood has Lucky Rooster Kitchen & Cocktails and Vale Street Venue,” she says. “They’re recent additions to the area but are a big draw. There are a few old school bakeries and car dealerships, too.” Aldi, Family Fare Supermarket and other grocery stores are within a few miles.
