Lakeside life between Detroit and Chicago
In South Gull Lake, fishing brings in anything from rainbow trout to northern pike, sailors race their yachts from Wednesdays to Sundays and divers reach as deep as 113 feet in clear, blue waters. Residents living along the southern shores of Gull Lake don’t call the area South Gull Lake. “The area is part of two counties and four townships,” says Bill Sikkema, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “It’s just called The Bay.” This collection of small, primarily residential enclaves sits 13 miles east of Kalamazoo in western Michigan and hosts several events as varied as the area’s wildlife. “We’re between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek and two and half hours from Detroit and Chicago,” Sikkema says. “We’re the center of the universe.”

Gull Lake is the center of activity and wildlife
Gull Lake spans 2,030 acres and hosts a handful of marinas where boaters can deploy in the lake’s blue waters. The lake is also a popular destination for divers, holding exploration treasures like a sunken steamboat and old railroad tracks, harkening to pre-refrigerator times when the lake served as a place for railroad companies to harvest ice for cold cars. Less than a mile east of Gull Lake, the smaller Wintergreen Lake sets a watery and wooded backdrop for the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Originally a dedicated home for Canadian geese and other migratory birds, Kellogg now holds nearly a mile of trails, a pollinator garden for butterflies and hummingbirds and 180 acres of wildlife habitats housing diverse species.

Condos, ranch homes and lakeside manors
Sikkema, a fourth-generation resident of the Gull Lake area, says homes on Gull Lake’s southern shores come on smaller lots and the area can bring more people than others around the lake. “The lots are tighter, and the area is busier,” Sikkema says. “Because that’s where the only true commercial zone is for markets, restaurants and a gas station.” Holding homes that range from large lakeside cottages to low-slung ranch-style homes, the area’s wooded lots come in a median size of less than half an acre. Condos are also popular around the lake, though they come no cheaper than single-family homes. Prices are as low as $200,000 for a two-bedroom ranch-style home with 1,300 square feet and as high as $3.3 million for a modern lakeside home with more than 3,700 square feet.

The Gilmore Car Museum and national yachting regattas
June through August, sailors race the waters of Gull Lake at local events such as the Gull Lake Regatta and the Gull Lake Sailing School Fun Regatta. “The Gull Lake Yacht Club hosts national regattas,” Sikkema says. “And last year, my wife and I won a Midwest Championship for the International 210.” Besides sailing, other attractions around Gull Lake can also bring big crowds. Just north of Gull Lake, the Gilmore Car Museum hosts events that Sikkema says draw massive crowds. “The museum brings in national events and thousands of people who come through on a weekly basis.” The Experience Full Classic Car Show brings rides from 1915 to 1948, and the Cadillac Fall Festival showcases all models of GM cars.
A small commercial area, but close to Kalamazoo and Richland
Eight miles west of the Gull Lake shores, residents can head to Meijer for fresh produce and other household needs. However, residents immediately around Gull Lake don’t have many grocery options without heading into Kalamazoo or Richland. East D Avenue is home to the community’s small collection of shops and restaurants. Captain Mo’s Market offers sunscreen, snacks and drinks, while The Vintage Modern Shop holds a trove of antiques and collectibles. The local flavor consists of restaurants such as Chicken House, known for its chicken sandwiches and hand-dipped ice cream, and Compass + Cleaver, which offers more upscale fare, such as chicken and mushroom penne.

Getting around likely means having a car
The neighborhoods around the southern shores of Gull Lake lack sidewalks and do not connect to any public transportation system. Heading into Kalamazoo proper, residents can hop on the city’s Metro Connect bus line, which has a few stops near the Walmart on Gull Road and a network of routes throughout the city. An eight-mile drive south from the shores of Gull Lake, Interstate 94 treks across Lower Michigan and takes drivers eastward to Detroit or westward to Chicago.
Boating, driving, diving and golfing bring major crowds
The most important thing for potential homeowners to consider as they ponder life on Gull Lake is the occasional large crowd. Sikkema says there’s a good mix of people who live in the area year-round and seasonal residents or tourists coming to enjoy the lake’s many events. Besides boaters and car enthusiasts, divers come to the area to train in Gull Lake’s clear, blue waters and golfers play the greens of Gull Lake Country Club—where Sikkema serves as president—or Gull Lake View Golf Resort.
