Urbandale is a quiet suburb with desirable homes and amenities
While it's one of Battle Creek’s oldest suburbs, Urbandale has been slowly gaining new interest. “It’s a pretty affordable neighborhood,” says Kaciana Champlin, RE/Max Perrett Associates, who was born and raised in Battle Creek. “We’ve seen a lot of investment in the last 10 years. There are a lot of 1950s and 1960s workforce houses being flipped.” Homes are within walking distance or a short drive of the Urbandale Business District. There are still some longstanding restaurants in the neighborhood, but others have closed and new eateries have taken their place. The area also has ample green space, gardens and walking paths to explore.
The neighborhood has ranch-style homes and bungalows on compact lots
Ranch-style homes are common here, as well as bungalows with Craftsman-inspired elements. Properties tend to be on the smaller side, at an average of just over 1,000 square feet, nearly half the national average of almost 2,000 square feet. The median lot size is just under a quarter of an acre, and the streets mostly have sidewalks. Prices start at $33,000 and go up to $245,000. Houses in the neighborhood stay on the market for an average of 115 days, higher than the national average of 70 days.
Bearcat Advantage helps cover college costs for graduates
School zones in Battle Creek are determined by street. Most students in Urbandale can attend LaMora Park for kindergarten through second grade. The school received a C grade from Niche. They can then attend C-minus-rated Ann J. Kellogg for third through fifth grade. Northwest Middle gets a C-minus, while Battle Creek Central High earns a C-plus. High Schoolers who attend Battle Creek Public School for all four years are eligible for the Bearcat Advantage Scholarship, which can cover all or a percentage of tuition and mandatory fees at participating colleges and universities. The school district also offers in-district transfers.
Nature lovers can hike, paddle or visit a whimsical arboretum
There are a couple of green spaces in Urbandale, including Fell Park, which has a baseball diamond and a playground. Portions of Linear Park’s 26 miles of trails run through the neighborhood. People can enter the park at the Jackson & Bedford Linear Park Carpark, and the trail runs along the North Branch of the Kalamazoo River. “A lot of people kayak on the river,” Champlin says. “There’s even an event called Kanoe the Kazoo.” The Lelia Arboretum is a 72-acre public garden with unique features like a Fantasy Forest with wooden sculptures carved into dragons and other mythic figures.
Urbandale’s shopping and dining centers on Michigan Avenue
The majority of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining is on Michigan Avenue. There are multiple options for getting a burger, ranging from fast-food spots like McDonald’s and Burger King to local eateries like Battle Creek Burger and Ritzee Hamburgers. The latter is the last location of a local chain from the 1950s. “The neighborhood used to be its own municipality,” says Champlin. “That’s why the name is still in some of the businesses, like Urbandale Hardware.” Family Fare Supermarket is in the same plaza. Shops and restaurants in downtown Battle Creek are only a few miles away.
Battle Creek has limited walkability but solid regional access
While there may be some walkability, it is still a mostly car-dependent area. “It takes around 10 to 15 minutes to get anywhere in Battle Creek, no matter where you live,” says Champlin. Interstate 94 is a major thoroughfare running through the city. It runs about 170 miles west to Chicago and around 125 miles east to Detroit. Battle Creek has public buses and an Amtrak station downtown. Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is about 20 miles west, a drive that will take around 30 minutes in average traffic.
