A mix of lakefront homes and suburban convenience
Bordering Battle Creek Executive Airport and Goguac Lake, Westlake Prairieview draws a wide range of residents, including those associated with Fort Custer Training Center. “There are a lot of different people who live in the area,” says Kaciana Champlin, RE/Max Perrett Associates, who was born and raised in Battle Creek. “Some are working on the fort, and some are commuting on Interstate 94.” There are homes farther out with more land or lake views, as well as properties closer to Lakeview High School or shopping and dining in Central Battle Creek.
Channel and lakefront properties vary widely in cost
Single-family homes start at around $80,000 and go up to about $580,000, with the occasional home selling for around $750,000. At around 2,200 square feet, homes here tend to be larger than the national average of just under 2,000 square feet. On average, lots are just over a quarter of an acre. Properties right on the lake are currently on the market for about $1.2 million to $1.95 million. “The channel houses are somewhat reasonable, and the open lake houses are going to be more expensive,” Champlin says. Condos range from $270,000 to $365,000.
Lakeview High earns a B-plus and offers college tuition help
Most students attend Lakeview Public Schools, which offers school of choice and in-district transfers for elementary schools. Zoning is determined by street address, and most kids enroll in Westlake Elementary, which Niche gives a B-minus. Some children in the northern portion of the neighborhood are zoned for Prairieview Elementary, which has a C-plus. Lakeview Middle also earns a C-plus, while Lakeview High gets a B-plus. High schools can take part in the Legacy Scholars program, which covers tuition, fees and books at Kellogg Community College.
Willard Beach Park and Woodland Reserve draw outdoor lovers
Goguac Lake is a big source of recreation in the area. "It’s an all-sports lake right in the middle of the city,” Champlin says. “Goguac is the main public lake, and it’s pretty active.” It is accessible by Willard Beach Park, which has an admission fee of $2 per person or $5 per car. Members of the Battle Creek Country Club and private waterfront residences also have access to the lake. Residents can park at the Helmer Road Entrance of the Woodland Park and Nature Reserve for summer hiking or cross-country skiing in the winter.
Meijer anchors shopping and dining in the neighborhood
There are some commercial areas within the neighborhood, including a plaza with a Meijer grocery store, a pharmacy and a gas station. The area also has a handful of chain fast-food restaurants. Local eateries are also nearby. South Side Grubz Soul Kitchen serves southern-inspired dishes like Cajun chicken and shrimp alfredo. Island Style BBQ has a Caribbean menu with daily and house specials, like oxtail stew with black beans and rice. There is more dining and shopping, including Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, throughout the area. Downtown Battle Creek and Lakeview Square Mall are short distances away and offer more options.
Most residents rely on cars to get around the neighborhood
With low walkability, driving is the most common way to get around Westlake Prairieview. “I’ve never thought traffic was that bad; we live in a super convenient location,” Champlin says. Interstate 94 is used to get around the city, as well as farther away destinations, including Chicago, about 170 miles to the west and Detroit, around 125 miles to the east. However, Battle Creek Transit operates public buses in the area. Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is about 20 miles west.
