A rural community with a quickly developing workforce

Bay Minette, a small town of over 8,000 residents about 20 miles north of Mobile Bay, was declared the seat of Baldwin County in 1901. Baldwin County Courthouse is the city's centerpiece, towering in Courthouse Square downtown. While county-wide residents come to Bay Minette to handle administrative and governmental affairs, the city grows in popularity for its developing workforce and low housing prices. "It's one of the last bastions of affordable housing in the entire county," says local Realtor Kiel Rubio of Wise Living Real Estate. He's sold homes across the region for nearly 10 years. "You can still find a home with two to five acres for less than $200,000, so it's still affordable and within a 30-mile radius of many new job opportunities."

Bay Minette is home to the South Alabama Megasite. The Novelis Corporation, an aluminum manufacturer, bought 2,000 of the Megasite's 3,000 acres for its new facility. The company broke ground for the facility in late 2022, and Baldwin County anticipates this will bring 1,000 jobs to the area. "There's a lot of growth in this area because the county is spending a lot of money on workforce development," Rubio says. The city also has a prominent timber industry.

They added hanging baskets to the city's downtown through the Bay Minette in Bloom Campaign.

Dining downtown and shopping along McMeans

The city has a couple of independently owned restaurants and shops downtown. "At the moment, there are some mom-and-pop restaurants, like Street's Seafood," Rubio says. "But Bay Minette is slowly but surely starting to flourish, and businesses are starting to realize the area's economic potential." Downtown hosts several holiday parades and events, like Burgers and Bingo on the Square. The city's few grocery stores are on McMeans Avenue, with fast-food restaurants, pharmacies and service businesses. "Walmart is probably one of the closest spots for groceries, but there are several neighborhood markets across the city."
