From antique stores to salty shores
The coastal suburb of Bayonet Point has "a bit of everything,” says local Realtor Susanna Vizzari of Re/Max Sunset. “There are beaches for swimming, rivers for fishing and kayaking, tons of shopping and dining. Really, whatever you’re looking for, you can probably find it close by.” The community, about 40 miles north of Tampa, is named for yucca, an edible root commonly referred to as Spanish bayonet for its long, pointed leaves. Like its namesake, Bayonet Point is a broad area bursting with sharp features and deep roots, including award-winning antique malls and locally owned stores near 4,000 acres of protected state park land.

Midcentury ranch and large garages
Housing options include multiple subdivisions of single-family homes, 55-plus communities of manufactured homes and a few condominium complexes. "They have a few homes there that were built in the early 2000s," says Realtor Jackie Little of the Little Group for Keller Williams. "They're almost newer construction because a lot of what we sell is from the 1960s and 70s." Midcentury ranch houses are the most common form of housing, especially in the Palm Terrace Gardens and Palm Terrace Estates neighborhoods. The handful of homes built in the late 1990s and early 2000s tend to come as snout houses with broad multi-car garages, like in the Beacon Woods neighborhood. The median home price is $231,000, just over half the national median.

Thousands of acres of nature at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park
The 4,000 acres of Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park lies on Bayonet Point's western side, reaching out to the Gulf with miles of trails, an extensive network of creeks and bayous, and tons of salt springs. Gators, manatees and hundreds of species of birds call the park's waterways and tangle of bald cypresses home. For coastal outings that aren't so reclusive, residents make their way north to Hudson Beach for fishing charters, sunbathing spots, and several restaurants with live music. Many residents also enjoy membership discounts on tee times at Beacon Woods Golf Course, a public 18-hole par-72 course just north of town.

Locally owned shops along Highway 19
U.S. Highway 19 is a miles-long gallery of retail options, with multiple shopping centers and standalone big-box stores. Highway 19 is also where thrifty locals visit the Lyon's Head Antique Store, a 20,000 sq foot showroom that houses over 50 vendors. Since 1975, Acropolis Meats and Deli has served the community as a popular option for choice cuts of lamb and other meats, and Carolina's Cuban Cafe serves up one of the most popular Cuban sandwiches around, rivaled only by their appetizers. More retail options and nightlife can be found near here or on State Road 52.

Toll roads and state highways
Although drivers can take Highway 19 to reach the downtowns of Clearwater and St. Petersburg, heavy traffic prevents most riders from using it for long trips. According to Little, car-dependent residents have "really easy access to the Veteran's Expressway" by taking the Suncoast Parkway. "It's also easy to get over to Interstate 75," Little says. GoPasco, Pasco County’s public transportation, has several bus stops along Highway 19. Tampa International Airport is about 37 miles away. The nearest hospital is HCA Florida Bayonet Point, located a few miles north.
Things to consider
Homes adjacent to Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park are at risk of damage from high water due to the park's many creeks and bayous. The area has a humid subtropical climate, with average summer temperatures in the mid 80s. Recent crime statustics are not available, but the Pasco Sheriff’s Office was the first agency in Central Florida to adopt a full scale body camera initiative. The county has a comprehensive plan in place that will prioritize future park system enhancement, rural land protection, natural resource preservation, and more.

A couple miles from the Gulf of Mexico sits the golf club community of Beacon Woods. But the quiet, laid-back location away from the bustle of the big city attracts more than just golf enthusiasts. "It used to be almost exclusively for people 55+ back in the day,” says Shelly Hayden, a local Realtor at the Biltmore Group with 20 years of experience in the area. “And while there are still those communities here, lots of younger people are moving in. The age demographic is shifting. Cities like Miami and Tampa are full of people, so people are going to the suburbs on the outside of those cities.” When residents are ready to put away their golf clubs for the weekend or explore the excitement of a city, Tampa is just 40 miles away.
The main attraction of the neighborhood is the public Beacon Woods Golf Club, with an 18-hole course spanning 6,000 yards. “A lot of people move to Beacon Woods to be close to the golf club. Most people that live on the course play here,” says Timothy Roache, a volunteer staff member at the club’s pro shop. Locals can also dine and drink at The Lodge and enjoy the pickleball courts and outdoor pool.
Residential subdivisions in Beacon Woods are full of ranch and raised ranch homes with attached garages, many built in the 1970s and 1980s. Newer constructions might feature backyard lanais, some with pools. These single family dwellings range in size from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and can cost between $200,000 to $500,000. The area also offers condo and apartment options, several of which are 55+ communities, with 1,000-square-foot units that are priced from $150,000 to $180,000.
When folks need to make a grocery run, they can head to either Fairway Oaks Plaza or Tower Oaks Terrace, both of which have a Publix. At Fairway Oaks, residents might stop for a classic American breakfast at Ram’s Family Restaurant. And while at Tower Oaks, they might check out the sandwich selections at the family-owned Sigmone’s Acropolis Meats & Deli. Heading closer to the Gulf, there’s a Walmart Supercenter and a few more restaurant options. Gianni’s Pizza serves Italian classics in a laid-back bistro. Next to the Beacon Woods Golf Club is the Paint Party Cafe, where locals might go when it isn’t golfing weather. There, visitors can sip on smoothies or coffee as one hand holds a sandwich and the other holds a paintbrush.
Students living in Beacon Woods can begin with a 16-1 student-teacher ratio at Gulf Highlands Elementary, which receives a C grade from Niche. They can then advance to Bayonet Point Middle School, graded a C-plus. Fivay High School, which Niche grades a B-minus, is ranked among the best high schools in Florida for both college preparation and athletes.
Cruising up and down the Florida coast is easy with U.S. Route 19 running along the west side of Beacon Woods. A few GoPasco bus stops are dispersed around town for those without vehicles, most near the main thoroughfares and retail sections.
When Beacon Woods residents don’t feel like a round of golf, they are centrally located near several Tampa area hot spots. They can drive about 40 miles to Tampa to explore the city’s vibrant nightlife, museums and Busch Gardens. “Clearwater Beach is about an hour drive south. It’s the big beach where a lot of people go,” Roache says. “And Homosassa is less than an hour’s drive north. There’s some cool stuff to do there, like snorkeling with manatees.”
According to the CAP Index, Beacon Woods receives a 4 out of a possible 10 crime score. This score is consistent with the national average.
