Life is enjoyed on the water in the Seafood Capital of Alabama
Famed for seafood and shipbuilding, Bayou La Batre is a happy place for those who enjoy life on the water. “Lots and lots and lots of people own their own boats and pleasure crafts to go to the beach and go fishing. Boats around here are like second and third cars. Everyone has one,” says Brandi Piedra, Director of Bayou La Batre Community and Senior Centers. “The Gulf of Mexico is our backyard.” Fans of "Forrest Gump" may be familiar with Bayou La Batre, which is the hometown of Forrest’s army buddy, Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue. Forrest later becomes a shrimp boat captain here. Just 30 miles south of Mobile and busy with maritime industries, the community maintains a small-town vibe. “Everybody knows everybody, and everybody helps everybody – celebrations or disasters,” Piedra says. “It’s very close-knit.”

It’s a short commute for fishermen and shipbuilders
Shipbuilders and fishermen don’t have to commute very far if they live in Bayou La Batre. And the drive to nearby cities and attractions doesn't take long either thanks to Padgett Switch Road, which shoots 10 miles north to the I-10. “You can be in Mobile in 20 minutes, in New Orleans in an hour and 15 minutes, and the casino boats in an hour,” Piedra says. Mobile International Airport is 25 miles northeast. Mobile’s Wave Transit buses do not travel to the community, but Wave Route 12 does link the Tillmans Corner Walmart with the GM&O transit center downtown.

Restaurants showcase seafood, Mexican and Vietnamese fare
For a small city, Bayou La Batre has a wide range of good restaurants, and many are locally owned. “Lighthouse is really famous for its crab claws, and we have a wonderful sushi place, Phnom Penh Fusion,” Piedra says. The pho at Phnom Penh is top notch too. Tacos and Mexican fare are on the menu at Kain’s Mexican Grill, and pork, ribs and chicken are barbecued inside the smoke shack at Capt’n Franks. There aren’t any major shopping areas in the community, but it’s just a “20-minute car ride to the malls and shops and all that Downtown Mobile has to offer,” Piedra says. Greer’s Food Tiger is the local stop for groceries.

Rolston Park overlooks the Gulf of Mexico
Recreationally, there's more than just boating and fishing in Bayou La Batre, and locals are proud of their parks. Zirlott Park is the hub for organized sports, hosting recreational leagues for football, soccer and cheerleading. Every community in greater Mobile seems to have a splash pad for kids to enjoy on hot days. In Bayou La Batre, locals take their kids to the splash pad at Maritime Park, which also has benches for parents. Rolston Park is a nice place to relax while enjoying views of the Gulf of Mexico and letting kids play on the playground. Bayou La Batre is also on the Alabama Birding Trail, and it's a key stop on the trail's Dauphin Island-Bayou La Batre Loop.

Homes near the water are often raised well above the ground
Home styles include Craftsman bungalows, ranchers and cottages, older homes built in the 1800s, manufactured homes and contemporary, waterfront houses. Waterfront homes tend to be raised off the ground. Prices for recent listings range from $70,000 for a three-bedroom cottage on a slab foundation to $385,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style house with Craftsman features in the northern reaches of the community. A raised cottage on four acres beside the bayou sold for $317,500. There aren’t many sidewalks, especially along the residential streets, so a car is needed to get around the community. “We are a very, very small town. Our population is five, six thousand,” Piedra says. “We encompass the surrounding communities of Irvington, Coden and Grand Bay.” The city also has a handful of apartment complexes.

Local boats get a blessing in May
One of the most popular annual events is the Blessing of the Fleet, held in early May. The event celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024. “It’s held on the grounds of our local Catholic church,” says Piedra. “They bless all the commercial and recreational boats for a good harvest and the safety of the owners.” This event includes a Gumbo Cook-Off, an Arts & Crafts Show and a decorated boat contest.
