Affordable coastal living in Bayshore Gardens
The coastal community of Bayshore Gardens is considered an affordable alternative to neighboring Tampa and Sarasota. The neighborhood's seasonal and full-time residents enjoy beaches, nightlife and a full calendar of events in lively Bradenton. "That's what people like coming to Florida for," says Marla Blair, former Realtor with Bayshore Realty, who worked in the area for about 7 years. "Those who stay full-time have a history of coming to Florida for vacations and holidays, and decide to move down. The price points are great, and it's just a really good location for families and kids."
Mature neighborhoods and condo communities
The median single-family home price here is under $350,000, significantly lower than nearby Tampa and Sarasota. While rarely on the market, the community's waterfront homes can go for $700,000 to $2 million. Residential streets retain an old-Florida character with midcentury ranch-style properties and mature oak and pine trees. Blue-toned properties reflect the nearby ocean water. There are also several 55-plus condominium complexes with pools and other shared amenities. Condos can range from about $100,000 to about $400,000. "We are one of the only areas where you can find affordable condominium prices," Blair says. "Usually, you're talking half a million dollars for some of these condos along the ocean."
As with every coastal Florida area, hurricanes are a risk from June through November. Homes closer to the water are in more danger of flooding, so flood insurance may be required in these areas.
Beachside activities on the barrier islands
Miles of sandy beaches and blue water are available on nearby barrier islands. Gulf Drive is one way to explore the coastline by car or bike. It connects the islands and provides a glimpse of coastal architecture, palm trees, surf shops and restaurants. Bradenton Beach is a family-friendly spot with outdoor dining, a fishing pier and mini golf. The nearby Sara Bay Country Club offers private memberships and tree-lined fairways.
Dinner with a show in Bradenton
Nearby Bradenton is a hub for shops, restaurants and nightlife. The Cortez Road corridor hosts big box stores, chain restaurants and small businesses. The family-owned 88 Piano Bar hosts live acts such as dueling pianos. "The performers are well-respected and travel all over the country. It's top-notch entertainment," Blair says. Locals enjoy the shows with pizza, calzones, sandwiches and drinks. Motorworks Brewing has a live music stage and outdoor beer garden under a 150-year-old live oak tree. Publix, Winn-Dixie and Aldi are all centrally located in Bayshore Gardens.
Arts and extracurriculars at Manatee County schools
Kids may attend different Manatee County schools depending on their address. Many students will attend Bayshore Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche. The C-rated Electa Arcotte Lee Middle also serves the area. As a magnet arts school, it incorporates art into everyday lessons and provides performing arts opportunities. At the C-plus-rated Bayshore High School, teens can join band, chorus, theater, and national honors society groups. State College of Florida Collegiate School is a standout charter school with an A-plus grade. It serves students in grades six through 12.
Farmers markets and Fourth of July fireworks
"There's always something happening here," Blair says, especially during snowbird season. The Bridge Street Market takes advantage of the cooler weather from November through April. Vendors line the Bridge Street Pier every Sunday to sell food, fresh produce, and handmade wares. The Fourth of July is an annual highlight, featuring fireworks over the water. Residents enjoy the show from boats or the beach.
Highways and bus routes in Bayshore Gardens
The community is sandwiched between Tampa, about 50 miles north, and Sarasota, about 10 miles south. Fourteenth Street is a central route toward Bradenton's shops and restaurants. Cortez Road leads west toward the barrier islands. Manatee County Area Transit buses also stop in the area. Commuters may need to take more than one bus to get to their destination. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is about 4 miles south, with nonstop flights to nearly 70 destinations.
