Beacon Falls residents are there for each other
While residents of the rural town of Beacon Falls, about 15 miles outside of New Haven, travel for most of their shopping, they can find community in their own backyard. “I have lived here my entire life,” says Elizabeth Setaro-Posick, director of Beacon Falls Public Library. “People help each other here. It’s like a New England Mayberry.” This town continues to find ways to get together, be it supporting the high school’s football team or attending the annual carnival put on by the local fire department. With the Naugatuck State Forest and several parks in the neighborhood, there are plenty of opportunities for locals to get outside. Students attend the highly rated Regional School District 16, which earns an A-minus from Niche. “It goes to show that a lot of people stay here for life, or move out and come back,” Setaro-Posick says. “It feels like home.”

Beacon Falls residents surrounded by the outdoors
One of Beacon Falls’ defining features is the nature that surrounds the area. “There’s a lot of outdoor activities,” Setaro-Posick says. Part of Naugatuck State Forest’s 5000 acres spill into town and offers several miles of scenic hiking trails, including the 1.6-mile-long Toby’s Rock Mountain Loop. Riverbend Park, which sits in the middle of the neighborhood, lets out onto the fast currents of the Naugatuck River, which skilled kayakers and canoers can explore. At the Beacon Falls Recreation Complex, kids can run around the playground or compete in a recreational baseball or softball league. When they need a break from the outdoors, residents can visit the Beacon Falls Public Library. “We are a hub for knowledge and fun,” Setaro-Posick says. Besides an extensive collection of books, the library regularly hosts events for kids, such as story time and literacy programs, and adults, including craft workshops.
The Beacon Falls Public Library is located on the top floor of the town hall building.

Residents travel 5 miles to nearest grocery stores
There is only one convenience store in the area, Beacon Falls Xpressmart. “We don’t have a grocery shop in town,” Setaro-Posick says. Locals will travel about 5 miles to Stop & Shop or about 6 miles to Big Y Supermarket. For any other essentials, they can visit Walmart, approximately 7 miles away, or Target, about 8 miles away and drive about 9 miles to Home Depot. What Beacon Falls does have is several locally owned restaurants, including The Original Antonio’s, which serves Italian food. “The food is phenomenal,” Setaro-Posick says. “Every time I go, it is so good.” The Tap House is one of the newer additions to the neighborhood, opening in 2023. It features a rotating selection of brews made across Connecticut and weekly live performances.

The town often shows up to support the Woodland Hawks’ athletic events, from football to baseball games. “Sports are big in this town,” Setaro-Posick says.
