Hays County master-planned community offers a slice of the Hill Country
Rim Rock is an all-residential, master-planned community in the small town of Driftwood, Texas. LSM Ranch, Ltd. developed the neighborhood with custom homes built on expansive lots, many of which also have their own pools. Out here in the Hill Country, the underdeveloped nature of the region is its appeal. Outdoorsy destinations abound within a two-hour drive, like Enchanted Rock, a pink granite rock formation that’s over one billion years old. Rim Rock students are zoned for top-rated schools, and homeowners are just up the road from The Salt Like BBQ, one of the most venerated barbecue joints in the Austin area. Rim Rock’s overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national figure of 4. The neighborhood is about 20 miles southwest of Austin’s nightlife and creative scene.

Rim Rock’s custom homes on spacious, grassy lawns
Residential streets and cul-de-sacs are shaded by mature trees and lined with spacious homes typically set on one to two acres. Custom homes may be single-level or multi-story; many have stone exteriors or accents. Some homes have perks like three-car garages, expansive patios, and energy-efficient kitchen appliances and construction materials. Prices fall between about $625,000 and $2 million; homes at the top of the price range tend to have additional features like private, in-ground pools. Monthly HOA fees are about $25. Modifications to construction or landscaping, including tree removal, must be approved by Rim Rock’s design review committee. Situated as it is in the Texas Hill Country, it’s not uncommon for Rim Rock residents to see native whitetail deer and other wildlife in the neighborhood.

Beloved local eateries on the outskirts of Austin
The original location of The Salt Lick BBQ sits close to the neighborhood entrance. Smoky aromas emanate from the open pit barbecue at the center of the restaurant. With over 17,000 Google reviews, word has gotten out about the all-you-can-eat barbecue platters, which include classic sides like macaroni and cheese and potato salad. Trattoria Lisina is another popular dining option, where guests can enjoy Italian food in a Tuscan-style, family-owned setting; OpenTable diners named it as one of the 100 Most Scenic Restaurants in America in 2019. Oenophiles flock to the area to sample the offerings along the Driftwood Wine Trail, which includes eight different Hill Country wineries. In the nearby town of Dripping Springs, shoppers can get groceries at H-E-B, which sits across the street from locally owned establishments like The Great British Baking Company and Vintage Soul, a women’s clothing store.

Hays County hotspots for outdoor recreation
While Rim Rock doesn’t have parks of its own, the beauty of living in the Hill Country means outdoor adventures are a short drive away. Blue Hole Regional Park is about 30 minutes south, where blue-green natural spring waters welcome swimmers from May through September. Folks can swing on the rope that hangs over Cypress Creek and swim among the cypress trees. From 2021 to 2023, the park earned the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award, placing it within the world’s top 10% attractions for three years in a row. Reservations are required and entrance fees are $12 for adults for half a day.
A bit closer to home, hikers at Charro Ranch Park may spot deer, birds and cacti while walking on the shaded dirt paths. The 64-acre park consists of a looping trail beneath tall trees marked with didactic panels explaining the flora and fauna. Golfers can practice at the private Driftwood Golf Club or head a few miles north to Grey Rock Golf Club, which offers memberships and public day rates.

The commute north into Austin
Like many neighborhoods in Texas, Rim Rock is car-dependent. Residents enter and exit the neighborhood via Ranch-to-Market Road 1826, and commuters to downtown Austin, about 25 miles away, can avoid the congestion of Interstate 35 by taking U.S. Route 290 to MoPac Expressway. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is 25 miles away and Ascension Seton Southwest Hospital is 10 miles away.
Preparing for the climate in Texas
Weather can get hot during the summer in central Texas, with average high temperatures reaching upwards of 100 degrees. And while the chances of a fire are slim, in case of an emergency, the neighborhood encourages homeowners to be ready to bring pets, medications and important insurance documents with them in an evacuation. The Driftwood Volunteer Fire Department is just up the road.
