Wide open spaces 20 miles outside Bozeman

Amsterdam-Churchill, about 20 miles from Bozeman and 10 miles from Belgrade, is surrounded by a sea of green farmland and is known as a popular place to settle down. “People move out here for a reason,” says DeeAnn Bos, a Broker with Berkshire Hathaway and Amsterdam-Churchill resident. “It’s a really special place to live. It’s not commercialized, and the lots tend to be larger. You have more wide-open spaces.” Amsterdam-Churchill began as a farming community that was originally worked by Dutch immigrants in the 1890s, and it is how the town got its name. Their history is remembered by a placard attached to a boulder on the lawn of the Manhattan Christian Reformed Church.

The park is about 20 miles away, and popular for hiking and camping. The Gallatin River is about five miles away, and it’s the area’s premiere fishing area.

Large lots for homes in farm country

Many homes in the area are located in the eastern part of town. The area doesn’t have much traffic other than the comings and goings of residents, and the streets are lined with trees. Amsterdam-Churchill is the kind of community where people know their neighbors. “I think people like Amsterdam-Churchill for the convenience of raising your kids in a community,” says Bos. Properties in the area tend to range from $600,000 to $900,000. Some properties can sell for $1.5 to $2.7 million, and these homes have around 1,000 more square feet than other properties in the area and lots up to 20 acres. Housing styles tend to be chalets, ranch-styles or farmhouses.

Manhattan Christian School, which has a B-plus rating and is located in Amsterdam-Churchill, is also an option. The school serves kindergarten through twelfth grade. “People bring their kids from Bozeman and Belgrade to attend the Amsterdam School and the Manhattan Christian School,” says Bos. Sports are popular for students at Manhattan Christian School, including cross country, football and basketball.

Dutch Supper, drive-in movies and community auctions

The Manhattan Christian School hosts a Dutch Supper for the community. Traditional Dutch foods like kippen soep (chicken soup), snert (green pea soup) and roggebrood (rye and graham bread) fill the room with hearty smells. The supper event also has auctions along with a movie showing and craft time for kids. For a fun night out, people head to The Pasture Drive-In Theater, which is about two miles south from most homes in Amsterdam-Churchill, while the weather is warm.
