Bell Arthur offers peaceful living and quick commuting

Bell Arthur began as a small railroad settlement in 1907. The community was incorporated as a town twice in the next 50 years: once in 1911, as “Arthur,” and again in 1933 under the new name “Bell-Arthur.” Today, Bell Arthur is a small town in Pitt County, between Farmville and Greenville . Ashleigh Daly Davis, a local Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, says its quaint, rural atmosphere is a large part of its appeal. “But it’s also right off the interstate, so it’s convenient,” she says, referring to Interstate 587, which runs along the north end. “It’s a nice place to live, especially if you have kids and want space to spread out, but also want a short commute to work. It’s convenient to Greenville and the medical district there.” The city of Greenville is less than 10 miles east.

Ranch-style homes sit at a competitive price point

While some of Bell Arthur’s original 1930s farmhouses are still standing, most homes were built between the 1980s and 2010s. Many are classic ranch-style, clad either in vinyl siding, brick or a combination of the two. “A lot of the homes in the neighborhood are modular homes, similar to manufactured homes,” says Daly. “The price per square foot really depends on the structure itself and the condition it’s in, but I’d say that modular homes built in the early 2010s are going for between $300,000 and $365,000.” In general, prices can run from $145,000 to about $370,000. “The price point is one of the most appealing things about this area,” Daly adds.

Public schools share a campus; ECU Medical is close

Bell Arthur students attend Pitt County public schools in nearby Farmville, about 5 miles west of home. The unique four-school campus houses students from kindergarten through 12th grade. H.B. Sugg Elementary serves kindergarten through second-grade learners and receives an A-minus rating from Niche, while Sam D. Bundy Elementary serves third through fifth graders and holds a B-minus. The elementary schools are attached, and are collectively referred to as Sugg-Bundy. Farmville Middle School also receives a B-minus, and Farmville Central High has a C-plus. The high school offers a dual enrollment program in partnership with Pitt Community College, and credits are transferrable to North Carolina colleges and universities, tuition-free.

Students can continue their education at East Carolina University, about 10 miles east. Known for strong medical programs, ECU’s health sciences teaching facilities sit next to the ECU Medical Health center, which serves the greater region. “The convenience to Greenville is a big draw, especially for nurses and people working in the medical field,” says Daly.

Local eateries and chain retailers are a drive away

In addition to recreation, residents also depend on neighboring Farmville for their retail needs. Locals can grab groceries at the Piggly Wiggly, which is near the corner of Main and Wilson Streets and surrounded by an array of quaint, locally owned shopping and dining options. Gorham's Café serves classic Southern comfort food, including East Carolina-style barbecue. Many locals head into Greenville for a wider shopping selection. “That’s where your closest big-box-type stores are, whether you’re looking for department stores or grocery stores,” Daly says.

Interstate 587 connects to Raleigh and Greenville

Interstate 587 runs east-west just outside of Bell Arthur. “You can take the interstate right into Raleigh and be there in about an hour or take it the other way straight into the medical district in Greenville,” says Daly. American Airlines provides three daily commuter flights to Charlotte, where passengers can then connect to a broader range of destinations.
