Suburban community anchored by Barkley Village
Less than 4 miles from downtown Bellingham, suburban Barkley is anchored by the mixed-use community of Barkley Village. “You have shopping, banking and restaurants all right here. It’s super useful for people who don’t want to travel far for those things,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company of the Muljat Group. Construction in Barkley Village is finished for the most part, though they are still adding some high-density apartments and condos. Most homes here were built in the 1990s and early 2000s, and many on the east side are within walking distance of well-regarded Squalicum High. Barkley Village itself is compact and walkable, while the rest of the neighborhood sprawls over hilly terrain like that found in cedar-forested Northridge Park. Homes on the east side are at the highest elevation, overlooking the rest of the city and Bellingham Bay. “This is a beautiful area,” Friedman says. “Some of the residential streets have incredible views and it’s also pretty close to a lot of great trails.”

Modern Craftsman and New Traditional-style housing
Most single-family homes throughout Barkley were built between 1990 and 2010, a mix of bungalows and multi-story houses with Craftsman-style details like overhanging roofs and covered front porches. Two-bedroom bungalows range from $500,000 to $700,000, while multi-story properties with three or four bedrooms range from $600,000 to $900,000. On the neighborhood’s east side, larger four-bedroom properties can sell for between $1 million and $1.3 million. The west side offers some townhouses, condos and apartment buildings, including many within Barkley Village; recently built three-bedroom townhouses range from $400,000 to $500,000, and one-bedroom condo units from the 2000s range from $350,000 to $500,000. Residential streets are well maintained with a combination of mature pine and new-growth maple trees. Some narrower side streets lack sidewalks, though it doesn't stop residents from taking walks with their pets or friends.
