Just north of the border with Illinois, Downtown Beloit in Wisconsin has benefited from a renaissance over the past ten years. Old buildings were torn down throughout the area and replaced with hip restaurants and locally owned shops with apartments and condos above. “I would like to see some of these business owners that own some of these places refurbish them, rent them out and do Airbnb stuff with them,” says Colin Schindler, a realtor with Re/Max Ignite and a Beloit native. He has his office in downtown Beloit. The revitalization was led by Diane Hendricks, a billionaire businesswoman from Beloit, who founded the ABC Supply Company, which employs about 1,000 people in the area and is one of the country’s biggest wholesale roofing and vinyl siding companies.

Trendy downtown Beloit businesses
In almost all the buildings and businesses downtown, Diane Hendricks has had a hand in the improvement over the past decade. “It’s pretty much been every square inch of available commercial space that has been revitalized, mainly by her,” Schindler says. “A couple of other businesses have come in, fixed and done things as well, but it’s mostly been her.” Bagels & More has been part of downtown since 1996 and is open for breakfast and lunch. Sandwiches and salads are also available using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Bushel & Peck’s also sells locally sourced products at its gourmet grocery store. Custom clothing can be created at Walnut Creek Apparel. “You can do embroidery and vinyl-printed graphic tees,” Schindler says. “They have those cutesy Beloit and Wisconsin souvenir gifts available, too.” Enjoy a smash burger and a craft beer in a rustic atmosphere at Lucy’s #7 Burger Bar.

Ironworks entertainment and high-tech hub
In Beloit's old industrial days, the Beloit Corporation stood on the west side of the Rock River and manufactured machinery for paper factories. A major employer for generations, the company shut down in 1999. Today, the industrial site has been repurposed as a mixed-use business and entertainment hub known as the Ironworks Campus. Most of the companies there are high-tech businesses, collectively employing more than 1,200 people. “The businesses are all in a cool, industrial, modern and hip environment. They even have a keg with free beer in the work area,” Schindler says. Recreational venues at the site include a golf simulator bar and, opening in late 2024, a duckpin bowling alley called Henry Dorrbaker’s, named after the person who opened Beloit’s first bowling alley in 1899. In addition, the Ironworks Branch of the Stateline YMCA is in the area.
Ironworks office and entertainment space employs roughly 1,000 people from the area.
