Trendy downtown Beloit businesses
In almost all the buildings and businesses downtown, Diane Hendricks has had a hand in the improvement over the past decade. “It’s pretty much been every square inch of available commercial space that has been revitalized, mainly by her,” Schindler says. “A couple of other businesses have come in, fixed and done things as well, but it’s mostly been her.” Bagels & More has been part of downtown since 1996 and is open for breakfast and lunch. Sandwiches and salads are also available using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Bushel & Peck’s also sells locally sourced products at its gourmet grocery store. Custom clothing can be created at Walnut Creek Apparel. “You can do embroidery and vinyl-printed graphic tees,” Schindler says. “They have those cutesy Beloit and Wisconsin souvenir gifts available, too.” Enjoy a smash burger and a craft beer in a rustic atmosphere at Lucy’s #7 Burger Bar.Strolling through Horace White Park
With parking along Grand Avenue and Bushnell Street to the north, plenty of spaces exist to stop and enjoy the 8 acres at Horace White Park. Walkways start at each corner and lead through open space, a playground and a picnic shelter. Rhodes Arboretum, also known as Mechanics Green Park, is just to the southeast. Mature trees shade four walkways that meet in the corner of this 1-acre space, passing by the occasional picnic table.Ironworks entertainment and high-tech hub
In Beloit's old industrial days, the Beloit Corporation stood on the west side of the Rock River and manufactured machinery for paper factories. A major employer for generations, the company shut down in 1999. Today, the industrial site has been repurposed as a mixed-use business and entertainment hub known as the Ironworks Campus. Most of the companies there are high-tech businesses, collectively employing more than 1,200 people. “The businesses are all in a cool, industrial, modern and hip environment. They even have a keg with free beer in the work area,” Schindler says. Recreational venues at the site include a golf simulator bar and, opening in late 2024, a duckpin bowling alley called Henry Dorrbaker’s, named after the person who opened Beloit’s first bowling alley in 1899. In addition, the Ironworks Branch of the Stateline YMCA is in the area.Elementary and middle school shift in the Beloit School District
At the beginning of the 2023/24 school year, the Beloit School District changed how their elementary and middle schools function. Elementary schools used to go through third grade and to an Intermediate school for grades four through eight. Elementary now goes through fifth grade. Students in this neighborhood primarily attend Todd Elementary, which gets a C grade from Niche. Fran Fruzen Middle School now serves sixth through eighth and gets a C. Beloit Memorial High School is rated a B-minus and has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Beloit College is a private liberal arts college in the downtown area with about 1,000 undergraduate students. The students mainly live in housing on campus.Beloit public transportation option
Public transportation in the city is provided by Beloit Transit System, with stops for the bus on Grand Avenue and Broad Street and north/south roads such as Park Avenue. The closest interstate is I-90, about 2 and a half miles to the east. Beloit Memorial Hospital is 4 miles north and the closest major airport is Chicago/Rockford International Airport, about 30 miles south in Rockford, Illinois.Late 1800s and early 1900s homes in Downtown Beloit
Most stand-alone single-family homes are east of the main downtown area near Horace White Park. Late 1800s and early 1900s bungalows, Farmhouses and Tudors are priced from $100,000 to $300,000 with some multi-family units. Some condos are above some downtown businesses. Two longtime churches are in the neighborhood, including First Baptist Church, which has served Beloit since 1841. The current structure on Public Avenue has been there since 1928. St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church has been open since 1885. It went through an extensive renovation in 2018. The CAP crime score for downtown Beloit is a 7, above the national average. The Beloit Police Department says on its website that they hold events throughout the community to form a bond with neighborhoods and inform residents of the latest crime statistics and trends.
