Northwest of Beloit is getting attention

The northwest side of the city of Beloit, Wisconsin, is starting to develop, and a neighborhood that may benefit from that future growth is Little Farms, about 3 miles from downtown. There’s some new construction that’s happening north of Little Farms. “It’s a neighborhood and a section of Beloit that’s starting to get more attention,” says Desiree Metzger, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Signature. “Usually, the east side of town and the downtown are the main focal points.”

Large lots in Little Farms

The closer to downtown Beloit, if a house has a significant lot size, it’s usually about a quarter of an acre. Homes in Little Farms are between three-quarters to around 2 acres. Houses along Frederick Street are more apt to have acreage. “Most of the new development is happening north of this neighborhood, so the area west of Frederick Street will remain undeveloped. Any further west, and you’ll be out of the city of Beloit,” Metzger says. Cape Cod, bungalow and ranch-style homes are between $100,000 and $300,000, with some houses as old as the 1920s and as recent as the 1990s. Some homes are in the moderate fire risk category according to the First Street website. It’s advised that people in these areas ensure that windows and doors are fireproofed and that leaves and debris are kept at least 5 feet away from the house.

No more intermediate schools in Beloit

Students in Little Farms who opt for a public school education will attend classes in the Beloit School District. Until the 2023-24 school year, the pattern was for elementary schools to go through third grade, and intermediate schools would teach children from fourth through eighth. Two intermediate schools that were close to this neighborhood ended up closing. Cunningham Intermediate is now the Beloit Learning Academy, a public alternative school for grades six through 12 that gets a C-plus grade from Niche. No new plans exist to use the old McNeel Intermediate School on Frederick Street north of Whipple. Gaston Elementary School is rated a C on Niche. Aldrich Middle School is located on the east side of the Rock River and gets a C-minus. “With this new configuration without the intermediate schools, middle schools are grades six through eight,” Metzger says. Beloit Memorial High School is rated a B-minus, and students can participate in over 20 clubs and organizations and dozens of varsity sports.

Walking trail at Harper’s Prairie Park

A walking trail around a pond is offered at Harper’s Prairie Park north of Whipple Street. “It’s a prairie area where the grass is pretty tall, and geese like to hang out there,” Metzger says. The trail is mowed, and there are plenty of prairie plants. Kids can use the playground equipment at Ritsher Park, a small green space with a picnic table and parking available along the street. Hinckley Park is on the other side of Madison Road, where there are a couple of places where a pickup game of baseball can be played. The Krueger Municipal Pool and the 18-hole, public Krueger-Haskell Golf Course offer more recreation about a mile northeast of the community.

Two parts to Dita’s Westside Pub and Grill

There are a couple of popular locally-owned restaurants near the neighborhood, including Dita’s Westside Grill and Pub. “They recently renovated and now have a sports bar in the front that’s open later and serves regular pub grub, and then there’s a family restaurant in the back, which is the original setup. They serve breakfast and home-style meals throughout the day.” Tony & Maria’s Pizza has pies up to 23 inches and chicken and seafood for those who don’t prefer pizza. With roots as a produce stand in nearby Janesville, Woodman’s Market has become a popular Wisconsin and northern Illinois regional grocery chain. It’s a mile north of the neighborhood located on Madison Road. Dollar General is another option for quick pickup items. Downtown has the Beloit Farmers Market, the second largest in the state, drawing over 4,000 visitors weekly. It runs May through October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The area is State Street and Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown.
