Improvements started and fanned out from downtown Beloit
With the proximity of this neighborhood to the downtown area, the improvements started about a decade ago and had a ripple effect. “It sprawled out from downtown. America’s richest self-made woman, Diane Hendricks, who’s from the area, has made sizable business investments in downtown, and everything has bloomed out from that,” Schindler says. Buildings have been refurbished downtown, and a riverside minor league baseball stadium has been built. From May through October, downtown is also a destination for thousands on Saturday mornings at the second-largest farmers market in Wisconsin. Other unique downtown businesses include Lucy’s #7 Burger Bar, specializing in smash burgers, which are thinner patties. Sides include cheese curds, a Wisconsin favorite, and a craft beer to wash it down. Street tacos are served at Truk’t, a trendy taqueria with an extensive tequila and whiskey selection. Bushel & Peck’s is a gourmet grocery store that focuses on selling locally sourced products. Places to eat in the neighborhood include West Side Family Restaurant, a breakfast and lunch spot. Nearby grocery stores are the locally owned 8th Street Market and Woodman’s, a few miles north.Vernon Avenue Park
Vernon Avenue Park is 4 acres in the neighborhood’s southern part. It has a couple of baseball fields, open green space for soccer or football games, a playground and tennis courts. Field Park has a paved walkway that goes diagonally through the 1-acre space. At a little less than an acre, Schellenger Park is a scenic venue with views of the Rock River from the green space. Across the Rock River on Shirland Avenue is ABC Supply Stadium, the home of the Beloit Sky Carp minor league baseball club, a Single-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. “The stadium hosts events other than baseball. They show movies and it hosts adult kickball league games,” Schindler says.1800s and early 1900s houses in Near Westside-Hackett
With improvements that have been made in the condition of houses in the neighborhood, some improvements are still to be made so that some houses will need a little work. Farmhouse, National Folk, Victorian, Cape Cod and Craftsman range from $75,000 to $225,000. “I love the charm of the houses here, and there’s nothing better than going with a buyer into these older homes, where the woodwork has been untouched,” Schindler says. “I feel the older character components are coming back into style.” Duplexes are priced between $100,000 and $200,000. If a house goes on the market in this neighborhood, it’s sold quickly. “To the outsider, Beloit is a very affordable place with the average selling price in the low 200s. Most of the homes are below that - it’s an attractive part of town, and there’s going to be competition,” he says. Houses of worship in the neighborhood are St. Jude Catholic Church, built in 1910, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a couple of Protestant churches, United Church of Beloit and People’s Church. A chance to learn about the history of Beloit is available at the Beloit Historical Society.Beloit Transit Service
Public transportation in the city is provided by Beloit Transit Service, with stops on Portland Avenue that go west to Woodman’s Food Market northwest of downtown. The bus also travels to the Beloit Transfer Facility, next to ABC Supply Stadium. The closest major highway is Interstate 90, which is about 3 miles to the east. Beloit Memorial Hospital is 5 miles to the northeast.Beloit School District Elementary and Middle School changes
At the start of the 2023/24 school season, the Beloit School District transitioned its elementary schools to serve students through fifth grade. Before that, they used to go through third grade and then go to an Intermediate School for grades four through eight. Students in this neighborhood could attend Hackett Elementary School, rated a C-minus on Niche. From there, Fruzen Middle School is an option for grades six through eight and gets a C-minus. Beloit Memorial High School receives a B-minus from Niche and has a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Students here can write for The Increscent, Wisconsin’s longest-running high school newspaper. Beloit College is north of the downtown area and is a private liberal arts school with about 1,000 undergraduate students.
