Scenic views around this historic central Bend neighborhood
Surrounded by the blue waters of the Deschutes River, historic Old Bend sits adjacent to downtown entertainment and Oregon forest land. “Everyone here is kind of outdoorsy,” says Sophie Gemelas, a former city resident who worked in Old Bend. “There’s plenty of sky, no huge buildings and lots of sidewalks. It just has a nice neighborhood feel.” Old Bend was a timber manufacturing hub in the late 1800s and the original city center featuring well-known landmarks like the Reid School, a tall, brick building which now houses the Deschutes Historical Museum. Many historic homes and massive century-old Ponderosa pines are also still standing here. The area’s high-ranked schools attract families, and people can see distant views of the Cascade Mountain range along Mirror Pond in the north. Locals enjoy dining out at popular restaurants and shopping in the Old Mill District, as well as gathering in beloved Drake Park for annual celebrations and parades.
Historic homes in a variety of styles
Old Bend's narrow, sidewalk-lined residential streets are laid out on a grid and dotted with aspen and pine trees. Early 20th-century Craftsman bungalows and cottages sit close together near the neighborhood center, shaded by pines and featuring vinyl siding and small, covered front porches; these homes range between $450,000 and $650,000.
Several other Craftsman homes and brick bungalows from the early 1920s are found in the Drake Park Historic District in the northwest corner, and Colonial Revival properties built between the 1920s and ‘40s are found further north along the banks of Mirror Pond. These properties roughly range from $900,000 to $3 million. Larger Craftsman bungalows built between the mid-20th and 21st centuries sit on manicured, grassy lots with covered, stone-paved back patios; these homes start around $850,000 and go up to $1.8 million.
