Early 2000s-built golf community with eateries and mountain views
Located in the high desert on the western outskirts of Bend, Tetherow is a gated golf resort community loaded with outdoor amenities and close to city shopping. “Go across the street, you’re in the city,” says Lynnea Miller, Principal Broker for Bend Premier Real Estate. “You have all the amenities of being right here in Bend, yet you’re off of Century Drive, which goes to the mountains.” Founded in the early 2000s after the 1990 Awbrey Fire decimated the area, the community now features modern log cabin-like homes, some within walking distance of the impressive Tetherow Golf Course and other features like a year-round community pool and fitness center. A combination of families, young professionals and seniors live here, and neighbors enjoy hiking on nearby trails and getting together for events at the clubhouse.

Custom homes on acres of land
Miller says many single-family homes in Tetherow are custom-built and used as short-term rentals. Since it’s still a fairly new neighborhood, several half- to 10-acre lots are available for purchase; these are roughly priced between $700,000 to $2.2 million. The pine-tree-dotted cul-de-sac streets here are well-paved and lead out to two-way roads like Skyline Ranch, which connects to adjacent neighborhoods like Summit West and show distant views of the snow-peaked Cascade Mountains. Contemporary 2010s homes with slanted rooflines and a mix of natural wood and stucco are gathered south in the area; these two to three-bedroom properties sit close together featuring brick privacy walls and lush, green lawns with fire pits. Prices range from $1 million to $3 million. A mixture of early 2000s and 2020s Northwest contemporary houses with floor-to-ceiling windows, large second-story balconies and in-ground pools sit farther north than lower-priced homes in the neighborhood. These range between $3.5 million to $6.5 million. Residents in Tetherow can expect to pay up to $500 in monthly HOA fees which go toward grounds upkeep and on-site maintenance.

The club also offers two bays for indoor and outdoor practice and lessons for all ages. The 3-mile-long Cascade Highlands Trail runs west-east in Tetherow with a mix of paved, gravel and natural surface trails for biking and jogging. Folks can also hike on the 11-mile Deschutes River Trail a few miles east, and Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is a popular weekend getaway in the winter 18 miles west.

Locals connect to U.S. Route 97 a few miles east of the area, and Southwest Century Drive borders in the south, connecting to downtown Bend 4 miles northeast and Mt. Bachelor 18 miles west. Preparing for wildfires in Tetherow
In 1990, the Awbrey Hall fire traveled through the Tetherow land area and other western Bend neighborhoods, burning over 3,300 acres of land and nearly two dozen homes. Since then, Deschutes County has taken measures to reduce wildfire risks in western Bend, including implementing the Firewise USA program which offers workshops on fire safety and disaster preparedness. While there hasn’t been a major fire since, the area is still at risk of wildfires between mid-July and August because of increased lightning storms and campfires.
