Where all are welcome
Located on U.S. 5, which used to be the main highway between Boston and New York in the 1950s, Berlin today retains some of that history in its main commercial corridor, says MJ Agostini, a broker with Re/Max Right Choice, who has sold homes in the area for almost 40 years. “Berlin is a welcoming place. You don’t have to be decked out to go out for dinner here. It’s not pretentious. People from many different backgrounds move here for more space and land — a more suburban life. The restaurants, businesses and organizations that make up this community people them feel at home.”

Rich mix of food and shops
Berlin's shops and restaurants tell many stories, such as Baltic, a banquet facility and restaurant that serves authentic Polish-American food. Polish Caregivers and Homemakers, a home health company, is right across the street, and the Berlin Polish Political Club, a private social club, is a few blocks down. “Good Cause Gifts employs and trains people with disabilities,” Agostini says. “It’s right across from Coles Road Brewing, a newcomer to the neighborhood. We also finally got a vegan restaurant, Soulfully Vegan.” Across the street, Himalaya serves authentic Himalaya Indian Nepalese cuisine, which features many vegetarian dishes. Portofino’s serves chicken marsala, veal parmigiana and other Italian favorites on white tablecloths, and locals who love to cook Italian can stop at Kensington Market, a grocer specializing in imported oils and other Italian goods. Residents can also pick up Spanish, Indian, Asian and Caribbean products at local ethnic food markets.

Homes for all populations
From classic and raised ranches with hardwood floors to large contemporaries on almost an acre, homes in Berlin come in many shapes, sizes and price points. “Like our people, the houses in Berlin are very diverse, from mobile homes to million-dollar estates,” Agostini says. “This town serves all populations, and you won’t find that in many other communities.” The terrain in Berlin is hilly, and many properities enjoy countryside views. With such a wide selection, homebuyers can expect to pay between $65,000 and $800,000 for a single-family residence. Most condominiums are available in the southern part of the neighborhood and list for $300,000 to $400,000, some part of 55-plus communities.

Berlin Fair in September
The four-day Berlin Fair is hosted by the Lion’s Club and attracts thousands to the fairgrounds off Beckley Road in September. “It used to be a local fair that now includes live music, pie-eating contests and 4-H clubs showing off their animals. Kids get the day off school, so it’s a big deal,” Agostini says. The 2024 fair is the town’s 75th.
On the lake or golf course
Belin residents can launch their boats at Silver Lake, which offers fishing derbies, or hike the scenic trails at Lamentation Mountain State Park. Pistol Creek Park, a former golf course, features a 2-mile loop trail, and the Berlin Dog Park nearby has a leash-free area. Athletes will no doubt gravitate toward Sage Park, with its football stadium, soccer field, and baseball and softball fields; and golfers are only 5 miles from Timberlin, the city’s 18-hole municipal golf course at the base of Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve.
