Seaside suburb just north of Boston
Steeped in rich maritime and industrial heritage, Beverly is a historic city in Massachusetts’ North Shore. Originally inhabited by the Naumkeag tribe before being settled by European colonialists in the 1600s, Beverly is also home to the first cotton mill and military ship in the country, hence receiving the nicknames “Birthplace of America’s Navy” and “Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution.”
Located about 20 miles outside of Boston, Beverly today is a picturesque seaside community with unencumbered coastal views, a vibrant downtown area featuring public murals, art venues and independent shops, and plentiful outdoor amenities and parkland. “Beverly has a number of trails and outdoor things to do,” says Rani Jacobson, who is Beverly’s Constituent Services Director and Projects Coordinator. “We also have an arts district in downtown with a bunch of galleries and a couple of theaters; it’s a really fun place to be with lots of entertainment.”
The city’s population is about 42,318, and the median household income is $103,739, which is on par with the state’s median. The city’s workforce is concentrated in education, health care, science and technology sectors, and top employers include Beverly Hospital, Endicott College and Axcelis Technologies, a manufacturer of ion implantation systems for semiconductor chips.
