An established suburban community on the North Shore
Situated on the North Shore, Centerville offers a residential enclave filled with stately houses and lush green spaces. “Centerville has a suburban feel with a larger inventory of homes,” says Marianne Round, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty with over 20 years of experience in the industry. The neighborhood sits in the northwestern corner of Beverly, a coastal city with a host of local amenities. “I’ve been singing the praises of Beverly for years,” Round says. “It’s the more affordable alternative to Cambridge and Somerville. It offers the convenience of a great downtown, popular music and theater venues, and beautiful beaches.” Centerville is about 4 miles from the action in downtown Beverly and just 3 miles from the sandy coastline along Beverly Harbor, and the neighborhood also offers easy access to Boston. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority offers train service into Boston, which is about a 25-mile drive away.

Centerville offers traditional homes and half-acre lots
Most homes in Centerville were built around the mid-1900s, but some of the neighborhood’s original homes date back to the early 19th century. Homebuyers will find a mix of Colonial Revivals, sprawling ranch-style homes and stately Cape Cods. Spacious lots average just under half an acre, with some properties offering over an acre. Mature trees shade the flowering bushes that adorn many of the neighborhood’s manicured lawns. Home prices typically range from $650,000 for smaller ranch-style homes to $1.5 million for larger Colonial Revival estates. The Thaxton Heights subdivision offers a mix of established homes and newer construction, with New Traditional homes built in the early 2020s selling for upwards of $1.4 million. Limited inventory and a low turnover rate combine to create a competitive housing market in Centerville, with houses selling after just a month on average.
Larger Colonial Revivals make up most of the Centerville neighborhood.

Beverly High School follows a 1-to-1 technology initiative
Centerville is served by Beverly Public Schools. Students can begin their education at Centerville Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade and earns an A-minus from Niche. Beverly Middle School covers fifth through eighth grade and because the school opened its doors in 2018, it’s not yet ranked by Niche. At the B-rated Beverly High School, teens can earn college credit through Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses. The high school follows a 1-to-1 technology initiative that gives each student a MacBook to utilize as their own personal learning device. “Beverly also has well-regarded private schools and colleges,” Round says. Nearby private school options include the Academy at Penguin Hall, which Niche ranks as the seventh-best all-girls high school in Massachusetts. The neighborhood is about a mile from Gordon College, while Endicott College and Montserrat College of Art are less than 3 miles away.

Handicap-accessible playground and sports courts at Pete’s Park
Once the summer home of American author and editor Ellery Sedgwick, Long Hill now serves as a public estate in the heart of Centerville. The Federal-style mansion features a music room, library and gift shop where visitors can stop to learn about the property’s rich history. A network of trails connects the main house to several lush gardens, and the property is open seasonally from April to October. The Beverly Little League hosts practices and games at the neighborhood’s Harry Ball Field complex, while the Alt Reservation hiking area offers nearly two miles of nature trails that weave past Beaver Pond. A bit further south, Pete’s Park offers an all-inclusive green space designed in adherence to the ADA’s standards for accessible design. The park was renamed in honor of Pete Frates, a college baseball player and prominent activist for ALS who is best known for co-founding the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Frates grew up playing at the same park, which has since been renamed in his honor and transformed into an accessible space with a basketball court, a tennis court and a playground.
Centerville is about 3 miles inland from Beverly Harbor, where miles of sandy beaches are open to the public. Local favorites include Dane Street Beach and David S. Lynch Memorial Park, which also offers a rose garden and splash pad. In downtown Beverly, boaters can join the Jubilee Yacht Club or rent slips from the Beverly Port Marina.
