A growing and highly ranked Boston suburb
Founded in 1655, Billerica is an important part of the Boston area as both the origin of the Yankee Doodle nursery rhyme and a picturesque neighborhood along Route 3. Today the community is a popular spot for commuters due to its proximity to Boston and its serene setting. “The area certainly means a lot to me,” says Mark Morreale, a Realtor with RE/MAX Triumph who was born and raised in Billerica. Highly ranked for education, outdoor recreation, and even its farmers markets over the years, the community has recently worked hard to evolve alongside downtown Boston. This includes school renovations and recreation centers that have been built alongside housing developments and new construction. “It's nice to see the town starting to develop commercially. I think we will see more of it in the future and further add value to our town." Even with all that Billerica can celebrate, the area still seeks to grow and become a place that residents can always be proud to call home.

Boston Road and commutes
Due to its size, Billerica is split into several smaller neighborhoods and areas connected by Boston Road, which creates pockets of walkable areas. “The town has an abundance of family-friendly neighborhoods,” Morreale says. “A lot of the neighborhoods are adjoining so there are plenty of safe areas to ride your bike or take walks.” Route 3 is on the western end of the neighborhood, allowing residents to reach downtown Boston in 30 minutes. Commuters can also hop on the train at the North Billerica commuter rail station to get downtown. Boston Logan International Airport is 30 miles away, and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is 10 miles to the south.
Restaurants close to home
Many residents head to neighboring Burlington for its commercial area and dining options, but there are also a few restaurants close to home. Mangia Mangia Italian Kitchen serves generous portions and specialty pizzas, and Garrisons “has family friendly service and fantastic buffalo chicken,” Morreale says. Casa Blancas offers unique cocktails in a comfortable environment. Residents can head to a Market Basket location just north or south of the neighborhood or shop at the Billerica Community Farmers Market on Monday afternoons from June through October. The latter was voted one of the best farmers markets in Massachusetts by the American Farmland Trust in 2023.

Recreational activities and Billerica views
Kids Konnection Playground off Andover Road is an expansive property packed with colorful obstacles, including bulldozer- and hippo-themed slides. To the west, the 16-mile Concord River borders a portion of Billerica and is a destination for boating and fishing. In the center of town lies Fox Hill Summit Trail, a light trek of just under a mile views of the forest below. Locals are also often seen at the Peggy Hannon-Rizza (or PHR) Recreation Complex, which provides recently renovated and refurbished fields. “The new PHR Complex is breathtaking. My daughter plays youth lacrosse, so we are there quite often,” Morreale says.

The Split entry capital
Many of the homes in the neighborhood are older and can range from historic Colonial Revivals, split-entry homes and Cape Cods. “I jokingly like to call the area the split entry capital of the world,” Morreale says. “A good portion of homes in the area tend to be split entry from the 1960s and 1970s.” Homes in the area are have also moved into the modern age, with the last five or ten years leading to a number of new construction projects around the neighborhood. Prices for single-family homes tend to run between $500,000 and about $900,000.

Yanke Doodle Homecoming
Yankee Doodle isn’t just a vestige of Billerica’s past. Rather, it’s still celebrated with the town’s annual Yankee Doodle Homecoming weekend each September. “It has been a staple in the area since I was a kid,” Morreale says. What began as a jingle about a former resident making a trip to Boston and winding up tarred and feathered by British soldiers has become a much more pleasant experience, with tons of fun, including fireworks, parades, food trucks and tons of games for the kids. “I went with my parents, and now I go with my kids,” Morreale says. “It’s a great time that brings our town together."

From the bartenders at the local watering holes to neighbors at the town of Billerica’s annual festival, you’ll find a lot of friendly faces in Pinehurst.

This unincorporated village on the southeast side of town bordering Burlington boasts a community of longtime residents, a busy thoroughfare with several beloved bars and restaurants, and easy access to transportation on Route 3A, which meets up with I-95. As part of the working-class town of Billerica, Pinehurst residents are part of an engaged community that comes together to work on big projects like new playgrounds, celebrate at annual events honoring its Revolutionary War history and to watch high school football games, says Deb Burke, a Realtor with Compass and native of Billerica.

“Billerica is a cottage community of Boston. It was always seen as blue collar, but it has grown exponentially in the last 15 years,” says Burke. “The community has a lot to offer as far as the schools, the senior center, the playgrounds and commuting.”

Home prices in Pinehurst are a bit higher than in the rest of Billerica, likely because of its proximity to the nearby town of Burlington with its regionally significant mall. Despite its incorporation during Colonial times, many of the early American houses here have been knocked down and rebuilt into more modern structures, Burke says. Hip-roofed ranch-style houses built in the 1950s can cost around $800,000, whereas colonials built in 2008 can cost $900,000. Sprawling colonial barns built in the 1970s go for around $700,000.

Students in Pinehurst can attend the Billerica Public Schools. Ditson Elementary and Locke Middle both earn a B-plus from Niche, but the district's crown jewel is the B-rated Billerica Memorial High School, which opened in late 2019 and serves about 1,700 students. Designed in part to reflect a community center, the new school has a gymnasium, dining commons, an auditorium, an athletic complex and a green designed to resemble a quad, all on one campus. Some of its prominent programs include the robotics team, the drama department and the business and entrepreneurship club. It also has an athletics department that maintains a healthy rivalry with nearby Chelmsford, Burke says.

If the outdoors are calling your name, there are plenty of places to soak in nature in Pinehurst and beyond. The Bicknell Town Forest, located in Pinehurst next to Ditson Elementary School, is a great place for hiking, mountain biking, walking your dog, riding your horse or going cross country skiing or snowshoeing. The big one, however, is Great Brook Farm State Park in nearby Carlisle, which Burke says gets crazy busy on the weekends. Senior citizens can enjoy painting, ceramics, dance classes and more at the Billerica Council on Aging.

Every year, Pinehurst and the larger Billerica community come together to celebrate the town’s connection to the American Revolution. The third weekend of September is known as “Yankee Doodle Homecoming” in Billerica. It’s held in honor of a Billerica farmer and aspiring Minuteman, Thomas Ditson Jr., who got caught up with British soldiers while in Boston looking for a musket. The English soldiers tarred and feathered him and paraded him through the streets of Boston, playing “Yankee Doodle” on their fife and drums. It was after that that the song became a badge of honor for the colonists, and to this day Billerica is known as the state’s Yankee Doodle town.

At the festival, there is a parade every year, plus a fun-filled afternoon with tons of vendors, local organizations, demonstrations and food and a Colonial Minutemen Encampment. It’s a lively event, says Burke, and the whole community gets involved.

“The first year I was there they had so many dump trucks throwing candy to people, and as time went on, more people got involved with floats,” she says.

Along Pinehurst’s main stretch of Boston Road, you’ll find a smorgasbord of chain restaurants, grocers like Market Basket and some local eateries. Check out the Emerald Rose for bangers and mash, Guinness-marinated steak tips and Irish egg rolls in a cozy pub setting. Just down the street, Newtowne Grill has draft beers, cocktails and bar favorites like nachos and chicken parmesan. Neighbors go to both places for comfort, Burke says, because they know them well. Soon, you could, too.
