A rural community surrounded by farmland
Shepherd is a quiet rural community that sits among pastures and farmland 16 miles from Billings. “It has that Montana feel, with rolling hills and lots of grass,” says Nancy Brooks, who’s sold homes in the area for 9 years and is a broker and CEO at Billings Best Real Estate. “Within a half hour of Billings, you can have a house with some property and animals.” While residents have plenty of space to keep to themselves the community gathers at events sponsored by the Shepherd Montana Lions Club, and high school football games. Emmanuel Lutheran Church has been a local landmark here since the 1930s. The Yellowstone River is to the east, and the Shepherd Ah Nei Recreation Area is another popular place to get outside. The overall CAP Crime Score here is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Manufactured homes with room for animals
While some houses around Shepherd High School and the town’s post office sit close together, most are spread far apart along narrow rural roads. “It’s peaceful here because you can have a lot of space between you and your neighbors,” Brooks says. Lots here typically range from 1 to 20 acres and it's not uncommon to see horses, chicken coops and large garages used as workshops, even on the community’s smaller parcels of land. Brooks says that most homes are late 20th and 21st-century manufactured houses set on permanent foundations. The landscape is dotted with some early 20th-century National homes and late 20th-century ranch styles. However getting anything here is rare as there’s no recent history of home sales. Historically, listing prices typically range from $250,000 to $350,000, depending on lot size, updates and exterior buildings.
Some of the manufactured homes in Shepherd sit on an acre of land or more.

Off-roading at Shepherd Ah Nei Recreation Area
The Shepherd Lions Community Park, located by the Shepherd Community Center, is the area’s central gathering place. The Shepherd Lions Club meets here and hosts regular community events, and the playground gives kids a way to burn off some energy. Arrow Island Park, 2 miles to the east, is one of many access points to the Yellowstone River, where fishing, kayaking and searching for agate along the riverbanks are popular. The over 5,000-acre Shepherd Ah Nei Recreation Area to the north is a popular off-roading spot with more than 50 miles of trails. Motorized vehicles aren't allowed in the northern part of the recreation area, which allows birdwatchers, hikers and equestrians to do their thing. The semi-private Pryor Creek Golf Club, one of only two 36-hole courses in the state, is 6 miles south, and bowlers can join a league at Town & Country Lanes and Lounge, which hosts cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights.

Bingo nights at Red Rooster Bar & Grill
Red Rooster Bar & Grill in the center of town is known for its homey atmosphere and American comfort food. The restaurant hosts regular bingo nights, movie nights and a food truck each Friday. To the north, The Feedlot Steakhouse & Razorcreek Saloon serves thick slices of prime rib and hearty breakfasts in a casual atmosphere. For shopping, locals can head 5 miles south to Huntley to browse R & R Hardware for tools and R & R Trading Post for clothes and antiques. Ranch House Meat Company on Highway 312 sells local meat and jerky, and groceries are available at Walmart and Albertsons in northeastern Billings.

Mustang Buddies at Shepherd High
Local kids can attend school at Shepherd Elementary, Shepherd Junior High and Shepherd High; the schools share the same campus in Shepherd’s center, and all three earn a B-minus from Niche. “Shepherd has its own school district, so it’s really small and more personal,” Brooks says. Because the schools share a campus, older kids often serve as mentors to the elementary students in programs like the Mustang Buddy program, where varsity football players are paired with a younger kid who’s interested in football. The school’s sports games draw out all members of the community. The Battle of the Bridge is one of the biggest games of the year, where the Shepherd High Mustangs duke it out with their rival, Huntley Project High.

Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital is around 18 miles southwest, and Billings-Logan International Airport is a 16-mile trip.
The annual Shepherd Jamboree
The Shepherd Montana Lions Club host events throughout the year, including the Shepherd Jamboree, a one-day festival each September with face painting, bounce houses and crafts vendors. Other annual events include roadway cleanups, an Easter egg hunt and a Memorial Day program at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Moderate wildfire risk
While Shepherd has a moderate risk of wildfire, nearby fires are more likely to reduce air quality than have direct effects. The Shepherd Volunteer Fire Department is based in the town’s center, and residents can download the Watch Duty app to receive alerts about nearby fires.
Winter here can be harsh, with below-freezing temperatures starting in October and lasting into April.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
