Burt offers laid-back living in Taymouth Township
Burt is a small community of about 1,400 people in rural Taymouth Township. “I like the smallness of the area and that it’s not really populated,” says Kathleen Naegele, director of Taymouth Township Library and area resident for about 50 years. “We have what we consider a downtown area on Nichols Road, and it’s just one church, a historic opera house and a post office.” Aside from a restaurant and a few convenient stores in town, locals are a short drive from the Midwest’s largest outlet mall in Birch Run. “It’s not really out of the way,” Naegele says. “The school district is in Birch Run, so people are there all the time anyway.”

Single-family homes on long streets and acres of land
Ranch-style homes built between the 1950s and early 2000s are most prominent, some sitting on up to 10 acres and generally selling for $160,000 to $330,000. Small 1940s bungalows on half-acre lots can sell for $100,000 to $120,000.
Most of Burt’s residential streets are straight and flat with no sidewalks. The area also receives a CAP Index crime score of 1, the lowest possible score. A freight train track runs through the downtown area, behind the backyards on Nichols Road. “The train doesn’t impact day-to-day life too often,” says Naegele. “It’ll come through and stop traffic for a little bit about twice a day, and when I’m doing my summer reading program at the park, I just have to stop and wait.”
Modern ranch homes sit on sizable lots throughout Burt.
Bungalows homes are commonly found along the backroads leading to and from Burt.

The shopping and dining experience in Birch Run, 7 miles away, is much more developed. There’s a Meijer for groceries and dozens of restaurants, plus Birch Run Premium Outlets, the largest outlet mall in the Midwest, featuring more than 100 stores. A community park and a library across the street
Built in 1891, the historic Burt Opera House was once a thriving space for vaudeville shows and other events. Now, the small venue is rented out to celebrate special occasions. Down the street, Taymouth Township Park and the Taymouth Township Library are right across the street from each other. “The library is like the home hub because, other than the park, there aren’t a whole lot of places to go,” says Naegele. “I do a summer reading program and almost always do it at the park.” The library also hosts an annual Easter egg hunt in the park, Burt’s biggest event. The park features two playgrounds, which the township plans to update in summer 2025, an 18-hole disc golf course and a softball complex. “The park is pretty busy because of the softball teams,” says Naegele. “They don’t just play games. They practice, too, so during spring and summer, people are out there all the time. It’s less busy during winter, but I’ll see some die-hard disc golf players out there.” When it snows, the park also has a designated sledding hill.
Taymouth Township Park is famous for its baseball complex that hosts adult and youth leagues.
Historic Burt Opera House was once a major attraction for the town and still hosts local events.

A 20-minute drive to Saginaw
There’s no public transportation in town, so Burt is entirely car-dependent. Interstate 75, which is about 7 miles away in Birch Run, can be taken 15 miles north to Saginaw. However, Naegele says most people avoid the interstate and take M-13 to get to Saginaw, which takes about 20 minutes. The closest place airport, MBS International Airport, is about 40 minutes away.
