Dedicated in 1886, Avondale Park is one of Birmingham's earliest parks. Its natural spring, "King's Spring," was a popular stopping point for weary travelers along the old Huntsville stagecoach road. Today, the park is still revered for its rolling topography, natural spring and rose garden. Locals can watch ducks swim in the park's pond, walk along scenic paths, play a friendly game of tennis or watch their kids hit a home run at one of the three youth baseball fields. Not to mention, the park has an outdoor amphitheater perfect for live music shows, theatrical performances, movies in the park and other community events.Crestwood Park is another nearby park, where youth football leagues, amateur soccer leagues and the Magic City Lacrosse Club flock to practice and compete. Residents can exercise by jogging around the field or playing tennis. The swimming pool offers an escape from the Alabama heat, and when residents dry off, barbecue pits and picnic shelters are available for community gatherings. The East Avondale Community Garden sits on the corner of 47th Street South and 3rd Avenue South, providing local green thumbs the space to build community while growing fresh produce.
Coffee and kitties
Cahaba Brewing Company is the focal point of the neighborhood. In 2016 they moved their 3-barrel homebrew project to East Avondale and transformed it into a 30-barrel brewhouse. Located in the historical Continental Gin Complex, it boasts 26 taps and a restaurant on its outdoor patio called The Current. Live music, bingo nights and other fun events are hosted at this local favorite. The Harvest Roots Kombucha Taproom also calls East Avondale home, serving delicious flavors of the fermented tea beverage using seasonal flavors and locally grown ingredients.Where can one enjoy cats, a cup of joe and yoga all at once? At Gatos and Beans, Alabama's first-ever cat café! When patrons enter this feline-centric coffee shop, they’re greeted with several colorful kitten-themed murals. Then, of course, come the cats. Ten dollars buys 50 minutes with the furry creatures, with a free coffee or tea and unlimited purrs, chin scratches and cuddles. All the cats in the café are available for adoption, so locals can meet and bond with them while listening to live acoustic guitar or attempting the cat-cow pose during one of the café's yoga sessions.
Dive bars, record shops, and tattoo parlors
The dive-y Mom's Basement is aptly named. This hole-in-the-wall bar feels just like the grungy basement of a best friend's house in high school—one almost expects a cloud of dust to arise when sinking into the bar's retro floral couch. Old-school pinball machines, darts, a vintage photobooth and even a wall featuring photos of the moms of various regulars are part of this gem's charm. Mom's Basement also frequently holds a vintage market where residents can buy eclectic and retro threads and art. Locals gather here for trivia, karaoke, funky dance parties or just a drink with friends. Nearby is Seasick Records, an independent record store that deals in new and used vinyl, cassettes and CDs.Sanctum Tattoos and Comics is the local spot for ink, whether on the skin or in the shop's impressive comic book collection. The shop carries a variety of current and classic periodicals and graphic novels, along with fun merchandise and art. Locals can pick up the latest issue of their favorite superhero comic and then get the same character tattooed on their thigh.
