Wide range of home prices in Greystone, a Hoover golf community

Greystone is a master-planned golf course community in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where buyers can find homes to fit almost any budget, from around $300,000 to over $2 million. No matter where residents live in Greystone, they get the same A-rated schools, access to HOA-hosted events and tight-knit feel with plenty of things to do. “It really is the premiere suburban gated community in Hoover,” says Mechelle Sippial Wilder, a partner and associate broker at ARC Realty who has lived in Greystone for 25 years. “It’s a friendly community with a lot of diversity. We have families, single folks, married couples with no kids, retirees.” While the community appeals to a wide range of people, Wilder says its family-friendly atmosphere is one of the biggest draws. “It’s a great place to raise children. We have four grown children, and we raised them all there,” she says.

New Traditional homes dominate across many price points

Greystone’s properties are grouped in gated and ungated subdivisions throughout the community. On the less expensive side, small two- and three-bedroom New Traditional style homes sit in ungated Greystone Ridge. Two car garages and brick facades are common here, and homes sit close together on tidy, landscaped lawns. Prices typically range from $280,000 to $360,000. In more upscale subdivisions like guard-gated Greystone Legacy and Greystone Founders, homes have similar New Traditional architectural styles and often sprawl well past 4,000 square feet. Lot sizes also grow in these areas, often an acre or more, and homes are surrounded by mature trees. Prices in these start around $660,000 and climb to over $2 million, with the most expensive homes often featuring in-ground heated pools, chef’s kitchens and other luxury amenities. HOA fees vary. Regarding crime, Greystone scores 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index, two points lower than the national average.

Students attend top-rated Hoover City Schools, like Spain Park High

Hoover City Schools serves the community, has an A-plus rating on Niche and primarily uses zoned enrollment but allows limited transfers under federal desegregation and hardship policies. The schools zoned to the community are Greystone Elementary, Berry Middle, and Spain Park High. Both Greystone Elementary and Spain Park High have A-plus ratings on Niche, and Berry Middle has an A rating. Spain Park High’s athletics department is robust, with teams ranging from traditional sports like football and basketball to non-traditional like eSports and bowling.

Residents can enjoy country club perks and nearby nature

Golf is the main outdoor recreation in the community, with 18-hole courses in the Founders and Legacy subdivisions. They are part of the private Greystone Golf & Country Club. Residents are not required to join the club, but if they do, they get access to the courses, plus pools, tennis courts, clubhouses and restaurants. The club is also open to members outside of the community. Lake Purdy, just outside the community, offers boat rentals and fishing. Oak Mountain State Park is about 13 miles away in Pelham and features miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails. It also has a pickleball court, playground and is home to the Alabama Wildlife Center, the largest and oldest wildlife rehabilitation facility in the state.

Route 280 offers essentials, services and local restaurants

Residents can grab groceries from Publix, located just outside of the Greystone Way gate, or head to nearby U.S. Route 280 for more options. Route 280 also has big box stores, services and a wide variety of restaurants, from national and regional chains to local favorites, like The Fish Market. This seafood spot has been serving the community for over 30 years and is one of Wilder’s favorite restaurants. “My husband and I go there all the time and it’s right outside of Greystone,” she says. Downtown Birmingham is about 20 miles away and offers additional shopping and dining options.

PGA golf tourney and seasonal events keep residents engaged

The Regions Tradition, one of the five major championships on the PGA Champions Tours, takes place in Greystone annually and is a major event for residents, country club members and golf fans from near and far. “Anyone with tickets can go. We have people who drive in [from all over] to come to see it. They bus you in on these huge buses,” Wilder says. The country club hosts live music on the green for residents during their seasonal concert series and the Greystone HOA puts on holiday events for residents throughout the year. “We have a huge Fourth of July event with fireworks and a concert that day. At Christmas, we have firetrucks that come down with Santa Claus,” Wilder says.

Major roadways are nearby and connect to the rest of Hoover

Route 119 runs along the community’s west side, and Route 280 is accessible from the south. Interstate 459 is nearby. Residents get around by car, as the closest bus stops are outside the community. Baptist Medical Center is a freestanding emergency room near Greystone Way. The closest full-service hospital is with Grandville Medical Center, about 11 miles away via Route 280. Birmingham-Shuttleworth International is the closest airport, around 20 miles away.
