Lakeview District

Trendy restaurants and new-concept shopping centers
What was once the Dr. Pepper syrup plant is now Pepper Place, an open-air shopping center developed to spur commercial growth in Birmingham during a time of economic recession. Chef-led restaurants, workspaces and locally owned businesses occupy over 350,000 square feet of space on Second Avenue South. The district also has a wide variety of restaurants and bars. "People who enjoy nightlife and city entertainment are drawn to Lakeview," says Ross Blaising, a Realtor at A.R.C. Realty with over 10 years of experience. Automatic Seafood and Oysters, operated by Birmingham natives, serves up fish and oysters in a dining room that blends fine dining with casual Americana. Just three blocks down 29th Street South is Umami, an Asian-fusion restaurant offering sushi rolls and tacos as well as an outdoor patio. Down the street from Umami is Mojo Pub, a neighborhood watering hole with a selection of local beers and live music. National acts and local bands regularly perform for thousands at standing-room music venues like Iron City Birmingham and WORKPLAY. Dog owners can enjoy a beverage and socialize their dogs at Good Dog Pet Resort & Bar, which sells an assortment of beers and provides daycare and spa services for pets.Convenient living above trendy shops and restaurants
Residents of the district live in modern townhome complexes and luxury condominiums built above the area's storefronts and restaurants. Condos feature a variety of floor plans and amenities, from in-house washers and dryers to common outdoor spaces. Many of these properties were built or renovated within the last 20 years, featuring updated appliances and interior designs. Floating balconies offer views of the bustling streets, while private parking and built-in garages give residents peace of mind living in a bustling city. Prices for condominiums typically range between $167,000 to $367,000. Townhomes usually run higher in price, ranging from $530,000 to $885,000.Convenient location to Highland Park community garden and dog parks
"There's a lot of parks not far from Lakeview," says Blaising, "Rhodes Park holds its own annual festival and there's plenty of other parks nearby." William J. Rushton Sr. Park in the nearby Highland Park neighborhood offers forested walking paths and a robust community garden developed in 2020 and managed by the neighborhood association. Rhodes Park features an outdoor stage and memorial plaque to the park's namesake, Rufus Rhodes, a notable Birmingham News publisher. The park has a reputation as an unofficial dog park and has been the site of the annual Do Dah Day pet parade and fundraiser. The Highland Park Golf Course is the oldest in Alabama and offers a pristine 18-hole course that is approachable to both expert and casual players.Local crafts and food at The Market at Pepper Place and SliceFest
On Saturdays, the Pepper Place parking lot is lined with craft and food vendors for The Market at Pepper Place. Visitors can browse a seasonal rotation of fruits and vegetables sourced from Alabama farms. Slice Pizza & Brewhouse shost a food and music festival to celebrate Birmingham's diverse food and music community. Now known as SliceFest, this widely attended annual event occurs each October and brings the Birmingham community together with good food and local talent.Inspiring athletic stories at Birmingham City Schools
Birmingham City Schools serve the neighborhood's public school students. Avondale Elementary teaches from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and was renovated within the last 20 years. Students move on to W.E. Putnam Middle and Woodlawn High School. All three schools received C-minus ratings on Niche. Woodlawn High School's athletics program has graduated prominent professional athletes, including football coach and N.F.L. running back Tony Nathan, whose high school football career was dramatized in the 2015 sports film "Woodlawn," directed by the Erwin brothers, who are Birmingham natives.Public buses connect the Lakeview District to downtown Bham
Residents are less than a mile from employers in Central City and the U.A.B. campus. The BJCTA fixed route system has bus stops throughout the Lakeview District that provide an easy and affordable way to get around the city. Down the street from the University of Alabama, St. Vincent’s Birmingham Hospital is less than a mile to the south.Important information about Dixie Alley
Birmingham is located in a region spanning the area between East Texas and East Georgia, dubbed by meteorologists "Dixie Alley" for its high frequency of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. The city has emergency preparedness plans in place should extreme weather events occur.
