South Woodlawn

Local housing initiatives and new construction add more life to South Woodlawn
The Cottages at Wood Station is one example of the housing initiatives in South Woodlawn. The development is made up of twelve single-family homes that match the bungalow architectural style original to the area. The subdivision includes a common green space that a Homeowners Association maintains. "We started this project in 2016 and sold 30 homes in the area," says Mechelle Wilder, a Realtor and founding Partner of ARC Realty who has sold over $160 million in sales over the past 20 years. "The first home sold in 2017 for $205,000. Most recently they've sold for up to $323,000. So, you can see that in just 5 years, these homes have really appreciated in value."More is on the horizon, with the organization partnering with the City of Birmingham, Housing Authority Birmingham District, Navigate and Alabama Housing Finance Authority on a project planned to include 20 total homes adjacent to the Park at Wood Station, right on Georgia Road. The development will be made up of single-family detached homes, townhouses and cottages. "REV Birmingham is putting a lot into the area," says Wilder. "It's a wonderful neighborhood for people who want to invest in an up-and-coming area, with lots of organizations backing its success."
Close to all of Birmingham’s dining, retail and entertainment
When residents want to venture to downtown Birmingham's attractions, it's as easy as walking to the rapid transit stations along Georgia Road and First Avenue. "It's a very walkable neighborhood, and you've got great proximity to downtown," says Mundie. The community is also close to Interstate 20, so it’s convenient to get around the city. Residents are also just 2 miles from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, making it easy to travel beyond the Birmingham area, or pick up visiting friends and family.Students attend Birmingham City Schools
In partnership with the James Rushton I Foundation, the Woodlawn Foundation constructed the James Rushton Early Learning and Family Success Center, a high-quality early learning center in the neighborhood. Tuition costs are based on need, and scholarships are available to those who fit the criteria. Children in the area attend Henry J. Oliver Elementary School and then filter into Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School. Then students attend Woodlawn High School for grades nine through 12. These schools all have an overall C grade on Niche.Thriving neighborhood center with locally loved restaurants and markets on First Avenue
One of the community’s favorite spaces is the Woodlawn Street Market. Here, residents can find art, jewelry, books, clothing, skincare, tasty eats and more — all from local businesses. When residents want to dine out, there’s only one spot in town where residents can get a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, grits and toast for just $4, and that’s Bayles Catering and Restaurant, a favorite since 2011. When residents are seeking more dining or retail, there’s a commercial hub 3 miles away in Irondale that has big box stores like Walmart, grocery stores like ALDI and locally owned restaurants and businesses, like Pancho’s Mexican Grill.Residents are minutes from nearby green spaces
When residents want to get outdoors, they can head to nearby recreational spaces like Willow Wood Park. The park encompasses large, grassy athletic fields, a skatepark, playground and a recreation center. About 3 miles away, W.C. Patton Park has paved walking trails that surround a pond, shaded picnic areas and a play area. There’s also a conference center adjacent to the park that’s available for event rentals.Local initiatives continue to help South Woodlawn soar
Working alongside residents, nonprofit partners and local businesses, Woodlawn United and its Woodlawn Foundation aim to create a thriving, sustainable neighborhood for those who live here. Their work is done by leveraging resources across three main pillars: a cradle-to-college and career education pathway, high-quality mixed-income housing and community wellness programming. The organization has worked to transform the streets of this neighborhood by reducing vacant and abandoned properties and replacing them with high-quality housing across all income levels. Those who live in South Woodlawn community never gave up on the neighborhood they love. Now that care for the community shines through every mural, local business and friendly neighbor.
