Hillside North
Suburban Neighborhood in Bismarck, North Dakota
Burleigh County 58501
Mid-20th-century homes along hilly roads
Most homes in Hillside North were built around the 1960s, so architectural designs and color palettes are reminiscent of the time. Ranch-style homes, bungalows, split-level houses and duplexes are the most common offerings, with a few condos also available in the area. Prices typically range between $200,000 and $400,000. Properties needing renovation are rare since "the houses are always really well kept up there," Thomas says. Many houses are raised to accommodate the neighborhood's rolling hills, which usually go unnoticed until winter when the streets become icy. Residents drive cautiously during this time. During the warmer months, large-bowed trees shade sidewalks, and American flags wave in neatly trimmed front yards.Enjoying outdoor theatre at Sleepy Hollow Park
Hillside North is primarily residential, but Thomas says that recreation is a significant draw of the area. At Lions Park, brightly colored frisbees whiz through the air of the disc golf course, which sits beside a large aquatic center. Open only during the summer, families gather at the complex to suntan, swim laps and glide down waterslides. The park also has paved trails, tennis courts, a skate park and two playgrounds. Sleepy Hollow Park is another nearby option, but not for playground playdates. A bright blue and white sign with fairy lights welcomes visitors to the park's vast woodlands. A lush growth of trees and shrubs looms over multi-use trails that wind up grassy hills and pass over gentle streams. Running through the park is also Hay Creek Trail, a paved path that winds through several neighborhoods and connects to the longer Bismarck Trail system. As the sun sets at Sleepy Hollow, a small outdoor stage grows bright with lights and song. Theatrical performances and live music acts occur throughout the summer, and hundreds huddle on picnic blankets and lawn chairs to watch the shows.Students can walk to two of their assigned schools
Education is an important part of life in Hillside North; Thomas says most people move here to be close to schools. Students attend Pioneer Elementary School, followed by Simle Middle School, which are both inside the neighborhood. Both schools earn B-minus ratings on Niche. Legacy High School earns a B score, and Niche rates it as the third-best public high school in Burleigh County. High schoolers who rigorously take dual enrollment courses through Bismarck State College can complete an associate degree and their high school diploma in three years or less.Learning about Native history at the State Museum
The neighborhood is near several city landmarks and attractions. Just west of the community is the Capitol Grounds, which houses the state's capitol building, the Bismarck Capitol Monument and many other essential government buildings. The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is also on the grounds, standing as a testament to the state's past, present and future. Galleries transport visitors back in time as people walk through replicas of 1950s soda shops and admire one of the nation's largest collections of Plains Indian artifacts. In the evenings, a giant glass atrium designed after Native American architecture is illuminated with colorful projections symbolic of the Northern Lights. The museum has many events throughout the year, as well. Its children's programming is among the most frequent and popular, but seasonal celebrations also draw large crowds. In November 2024, the museum celebrated its 10th anniversary and the 135th anniversary of North Dakota's statehood.Interstate 94 around the corner
No public transportation is available around Hillside North, but residents are near plenty of main thoroughfares. East Divide Avenue and North 26th Street are the primary routes in and out of the neighborhood, while State Street intersects with Interstate 94. Bismarck Municipal Airport is roughly a 4-mile drive south.Fresh pastries and pork belly tacos
Restaurants and shops line State Street, a major road outside the neighborhood. Stonehome Brewing Company pairs beer flights with elevated casual bites, like pork belly tacos. Edison bulbs and candle chandeliers hang over customers at The Tavern Grill, which gets extra packed during Sunday brunch. People grab hot-and-fresh donuts at Bearscat Bakehouse and splurge on sushi dinners at Ichiban Ramen Japanese & Asian Bistro. A Menards home improvement store, a Family Fare Supermarket and a movie theater are within 2 miles away. Downtown Bismarck is less than 2 miles away, offering a broader selection of boutique shops and local eateries.
