Suburban streets and ample parks in North Hills neighborhood

Near the northernmost edge of Bismarck, North Hills gives its residents a suburban experience. Home styles are diverse, and mature trees shade mid-size yards where flower gardens grow in the summer, and snowmen smile in the winter. Multiple parks are within walking distance of the hilly neighborhood, offering year-round activity through playgrounds, dog parks and ice rinks. The neighborhood's residential atmosphere can make it feel separate from city life, but several shopping centers and restaurants are just outside the community.

Diverse housing, from condo communities to Tudor-inspired homes

The community has a blend of single-family homes, condominiums and townhouses dating back to the late 1970s. While condos and townhouses share a cohesive look, detached homes show more individuality. "North Hills is from a time when every house was built differently," says Ann Andre, broker associate at eXp Realty. "They all have their own style and charm, unlike newer developments with five plans that they keep repeating." Buyers can find ranch-style homes next to split-level houses, duplexes and New Traditional homes. Most have design quirks, like distinctive Tudor-style half-timbering or midcentury modern slanted roofs. Condos and townhouses range between $125,000 and $480,000, while detached homes cost between $300,000 and $500,000.

Year-round reaction at the parks on North 4th and East Century

Inside the neighborhood, Normandy Park has a construction-themed playground, complete with an excavation digger that scoops up sand. The community's largest parks are on the corner of North 4th Street and East Century Avenue. Century Recreation Area Bark Park lets pets of all sizes run free in four different fenced fields. Connected to the park are Capital Racquet & Fitness Center and Gateway Pond, which has a half-mile walking loop. On the other side of the intersection is Jaycee Centennial Park, where kids play on the playground while groups picnic or walk the grounds. The park stays just as versatile in the winter thanks to its ice rink and hilly terrain. "When we're not having a bad winter, you'll see a lot of people over there sledding with their kids and ice skating," Andre says.

Flurry Fest visits the neighborhood’s largest parks

North Hills doesn't typically host community events, but city events, like the annual Flurry Fest, come to the neighborhood's parks. "Flurry Fest is our celebration of winter where we encourage people to get out as much as possible," says Dana Schaar Jahner, community relations manager at the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District. "We want people to be active throughout the year, and that gets a little harder when it's colder." As part of this monthlong celebration, Jaycee Centennial Park holds a skating event with the Bismarck Bobcats, the city's Tier II junior ice hockey team. Attendees skate all afternoon, then enjoy winter-themed snacks at the warming house. Volunteers hand out free tennis balls at Century Recreation Area Bark Park the next day.

12th Street stays busy with traffic heading to and from the interstate

Even with accessible sidewalks, most residents drive to get around since public transportation is unavailable. Main roads include 43rd Avenue Northeast, East Century Avenue and 12th Street Northeast. The intersection of 12th Street and Century Avenue can get congested during peak traffic hours, occasionally increasing neighborhood noise levels. However, 12th Street leads to Interstate 94 and downtown Bismarck within 3 miles. The neighborhood is also 3 miles from Sanford Medical Center and less than 7 miles from Bismarck Municipal Airport.

Restaurants and shops surround North Hills

While North Hills is primarily residential, retail and restaurant options are plentiful. "It's just as easy to go shopping on the north side as it is downtown," Andre says. Old 10 Bar & Grill hands out free popcorn with its relaxed American fare, and Grand Junction Grilled Subs offers a quick bite around lunch. Crumbl and La Michoacana Mexican Snacks are nearby favorites for an after-meal dessert. More restaurants line 12th Street. People grab groceries at Cash Wise Foods Grocery Store or Family Fare Supermarket.
