Rural community in the Allegheny Mountains
Blacklick Township is a rural community on the northern edge of the Allegheny Mountains. Named after the creek that borders the town, the first settlement in the area was the village of Belsano in 1830. The town was organized in 1850, and lumbering was a major export before the discovery of nearby coal deposits. By the completion of the town’s railroad in 1894, Blacklick Township was a leading producer of bituminous coal. Most coal operations in the area have since closed, and farming has become one of the predominant industries. Today, the township has a population of just under 2,000 and attracts homebuyers looking to get away from the city. “It has a country atmosphere. People looking here want something more rural than Johnstown or Altoona,” says Mary Kay Barton, a Realtor with Stultz Real Estate Agency, who’s been selling homes in the area for over a decade.
