Blacksburg neighborhood established in 1943

Airport Acres was established in 1943 when the neighborhood’s first home was built and subsequently occupied by James J. Pandapas, a prominent industry businessman who played a significant role in developing the town of Blacksburg. Since its establishment, Airport Acres has seen the construction of an elementary school, a shopping center, and many more residential properties. The neighborhood’s name comes from the adjacent Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport, a public airfield often used for corporate travel and college sporting events. Bordering Airport Acres is Main Street, or Business Route 460, which goes north into the Downtown Blacksburg area right next to the Virginia Tech campus.

Shopping, dining and entertainment at First & Main

First & Main is a popular shopping, dining and entertainment destination located in Airport Acres. “First & Main is designed so you have freestanding stores,” says Nancy Phillips, a Blacksburg resident and real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Townside Realtors. Within the shopping center is B&B Theatres, where locals can watch movie screenings, go bowling at B-Roll Bowling, play games at the Outtakes Arcade or sit down at McClain’s restaurant for a meal. Phillips recommends two other First & Main dining spots: “Avellino’s if you like Italian, El Rodeo if you like Mexican,” she says. “I would also personally recommend Lefty’s, which is farther on up Main Street – it’s got something for everyone. And right across the street from that is a bakery called Our Daily Bread, where they also serve lunch and dinner in addition to selling pastries.” Airport Acres is also home to two supermarkets: Kroger and Oasis World Market, an international grocery store in the Blacksburg Square shopping mall next to Our Daily Bread.
