Scenic Blacksburg suburb near Ellett Valley
The Blacksburg suburb of Alleghany was originally developed in the mid-to-late 1900s to accommodate a growing population of Virginia Tech faculty and staff. The sizeable green lawns and abundant trees in this fan-shaped area give it a rural feel, even though it’s only a mile from campus and the downtown area. Residents here can enjoy scenic views of the Montgomery County countryside as they walk around quiet cul-de-sacs and stroll through nearby wooded areas. Alleghany is bordered to the east by a series of rolling foothills that act as a natural barrier between the town of Blacksburg and Ellett Valley, a historic agricultural area. “There are a lot of farms in that region,” says Nancy Phillips, a local real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Townside Realtors. “Also, Virginia Tech is a land grant university – if you look at maps of Blacksburg, tons and tons of the land is owned by Tech, so there’s a lot of rural research areas tucked in around the neighborhoods.”
