Across the street from the Virginia Tech campus, McBryde is a mixed-property neighborhood where nearly everything residents need is within walking distance. This neighborhood is home to the University Mall Shopping Center, a sprawling commercial shopping area that spans several blocks along University City Boulevard. The remainder of McBryde is made up of multiple apartment complexes and a swath of single-family homes situated along secluded cul-de-sacs. Downtown Blacksburg is located less than a mile away from this neighborhood, which also borders the Route 460 Bypass, a major thoroughfare that connects to the nearby town of Christiansburg. Between shopping plazas, the university, and immediate access to the highway, convenience is one of McBryde's biggest draws.

Mid-century ranch-style residences and townhouses

The single-family homes within this neighborhood are primarily ranch-style dwellings, split-levels and bi-levels. Most of these houses were built during the mid to late 20th century: “Virginia Tech went through a growing spurt in the 60s and 70s, and there were a lot of houses built during that time,” says Amy Hudson, broker/owner of RE/MAX 8 and Blacksburg resident. “When we got to the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a housing boom before the bust of the recession, and it wasn’t until around 2013 that we started to see home building come back online.” Many of these properties also feature paved driveways, attached garages and well-maintained front yards dotted with trees. Those looking to live in this neighborhood also have several apartment options, including the Chasewood Apartments, the Sundance Village Apartments and the Union Blacksburg community. A majority of single-family homes here cost between $350,000 and $550,000, while townhouses can range from $200,000 to $400,000.
