Single-family properties from the early 20th century

The vast majority of single-family homes in Miller Southside were built between the 1900s and the 1940s, and many reflect the classic architectural styles from that time period. Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares, bungalows and Tudor Revivals are the most common housing styles in this neighborhood, but prospective homebuyers can also find a handful of ranch-style dwellings. Very few of the homes have undergone renovations and remain in good condition with their original designs. Some properties have driveways and garages, but street parking is available and common in this area. Towering maple, oak and dogwood trees shade the sidewalks, while landscaped front lawns line the residential streets, giving this neighborhood a more natural atmosphere. Biking on the Huckleberry Trail

Toward the southern end of Miller Southside, residents can access the 15-mile Huckleberry Trail at the intersection of Energy Drive and Airport Road. The Huckleberry Trail’s pedestrian-only pathways run all the way through Blacksburg and travel south into the nearby town of Christiansburg. Nancy Phillips, a local real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Townside Realtors, says that one of the best perks of Blacksburg is that the weather allows residents to enjoy the outdoors year-round: “We have four true seasons, and we don’t get a lot of humidity, even in the summer,” she says. “We’re in the mountains, and it’s a breezy area, so everything cools down at night.” Less than 1 mile north of Miller Southside is the sprawling Virginia Tech campus, which offers a number of outdoor spaces for the community. “On most Friday nights in the summer, there’s a live band Downtown next to campus, and people can just spring a picnic right there on Henderson Lawn,” Phillips says.

Shopping and dining along South Main Street

Directly south of the neighborhood are a series of strip malls situated along South Main Street. One of these areas is Gables Shopping Center, which is home to a Kroger supermarket and several restaurants, including Hello Bagel and Lefty’s. Across the street is Blacksburg Square, which features a Dollar Tree and Oasis World Market, an international grocery store. First & Main is a large commercial complex down the road with a movie theatre, bowling alley and more. “First and Main has stores like Runabout Sports, hardware stores, a Virginia Tech souvenir shop and Talbot’s,” Phillips says. “There are also Italian, Japanese and Mexican restaurants there.” For big box stores, residents can drive down North Franklin Street in Christiansburg, where they can shop for a variety of retail items and household necessities at Target, or pick up home improvement tools from the Home Depot. "Christiansburg is basically the bedroom community that's taken over everything that Blacksburg won't take," says Amy Hudson, a Blacksburg resident and broker/owner of RE/MAX 8.

And during the semester, Virginia Tech hosts the International Street Fair.” For more than 60 years, the university has put together the International Street Fair, which showcases cultural traditions, displays and food from several dozen countries; the event takes place during the spring on campus along Alumni Mall, a stretch of outdoor green space that branches off of Main Street.
