In between a golf course and downtown Blacksburg
Mountain View once stood alongside Blacksburg Country Club, which was sold to the city and converted into the public Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course in the ‘70s. When the country club was open, homes were often built on spacious, wooded lots with plenty of privacy, while the homes added in the decades after the course’s conversion are bunched closer together in a more typical subdivision pattern. The golf course, along with a neighboring farm, buffers the north side of the neighborhood from surrounding subdivisions. Many residents enjoy walking the quiet streets, says Blacksburg-based Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Realtor Tyler Hawes. The roads alternate between shaded streets and hilly lanes that offer views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The setting contrasts with the late-night bars concentrated in downtown Blacksburg, less than half a mile from the neighborhood.
The scenic beauty of Mountain View adds to its appeal as a desirable place to live.
Mountain View is known for its scenic landscapes and panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Fine dining and nightlife downtown
It takes a 200-yard walk down South Main Street to get from Mountain View to downtown Blacksburg’s shops, restaurants and bars. Downtown is full of hangouts for Virginia Tech students, such as the 45-year-old bar Top of the Stairs, but it also has more subdued spots including 622 North, which serves racks of lamb and wine by the bottle. Clothing boutiques and Main Street Pharmacy are sprinkled among the college bookstores, coffee shops and bars. Kroger sells groceries less than a mile from Mountain View, but Walmart, Lowes and big-box stores are 5 miles away in Christiansburg. Within the neighborhood are two churches: Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, founded in 1832, and Blacksburg Church of Christ, which runs a college-student ministry.

Across Country Club Drive from the course is Crestview Tot Lot Playground. The small city park features playgrounds and swings in mulch pits.

A new generation of homes being built
Homes built when the country club was operational are often Cape Cods or minimal traditional homes on lots up to half an acre in size, with shade trees buffering yards from neighboring properties. Craftsman-inspired new traditional houses built since 2000 offer larger floorplans. The only homes that face the golf course are along the east end of Willard Drive Southeast. However, the neighborhood’s more expensive houses are the larger, newer properties further west on Willard Drive. A 4,000-plus-square-foot home built since 2020 can sell for $900,000 or more, while houses with less than 2,000 square feet of space cost around $500,000, the low end for the neighborhood.
