Student housing meets subdivision living
The multistory apartment complexes along Patrick Henry Drive in Shenandoah are the kind of places Virginia Tech students may spend their years in Blacksburg. In fact, this area is prominently featured on the university’s map of off-campus student housing options. But once students graduate and move out of those rental complexes, they’re not necessarily done with life in Blacksburg. “Virginia Tech students, they’re loyal,” says Jay Mandell, co-owner of MR Real Estate Team and a real estate agent in the area for more than 20 years. “They get to a point in their careers where they want to raise a family. A lot of people move back here because they had an affiliation with the town in their past lives.” The small neighborhood of Shenandoah has housing for both stages of life. There’s a mass of rental communities and a cluster of larger single-family homes. From either one, it’s easy to get on Main Street and visit 50-year-old family businesses or downtown dives the college town is known for.
Cycle around Shenandoah
The Shenandoah Bike Trail encircles the neighborhood’s collection of single-family homes. Homeowners are within a 10-minute walk of an entrance to the paved trail, which runs for just over a mile through shaded groves and behind neighbors’ fence lines. Benches, picnic tables and a playground dot the trail. A mile away, canines run and play at Blacksburg Dog Park. Some of the area’s best recreation is just beyond the town’s boundaries. Mandell points to Giles County, covered by nearly 100 square miles of Jefferson National Forest and 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Shenandoah residents are within a 10-mile drive of the county. The various houses of worship in and just outside the neighborhood include Ascent Church, the Islamic Society of New River Valley and a Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall.
Doughnuts and drinks on Main Street
A few businesses operate near the neighborhood at the intersection of Patrick Henry Drive and North Main Street. These include Blacksburg icon Carol Lee Donuts, a family-owned shop that opened in 1968. Across the street from Carol Lee Donuts, locals can shop at Food Lion, fill prescriptions at locally owned Blacksburg Pharmacy and grab a pie from Roma Pizza. About a mile south of the neighborhood, downtown begins. A mile-long strip on either side of Main Street is flanked by eateries, bars and boutique shops. Some are relaxed hangouts, such as Egyptian-Lebanese café Halwa, while others, such as the bar Top of the Stairs, are often packed with students until late in the evening.
Single-family homes off Progress Street
Apartment communities geared toward Virginia Tech students cover much of the neighborhood, particularly along Patrick Henry Drive. Rentals on this side of town are known for late-night noise and parties, though single-family homes are buffered from the nearest apartments by at least a couple hundred feet of trees. Single-family homes are confined to the winding roads off Progress Street. Colonial Revivals and ranch homes stand on modestly sized lots heavy with trees and flower gardens. Most homes have driveways and garages for the cars that residents use to reach shopping and entertainment outside the neighborhood. Homes sell between the high $300,000s and the mid-$600,000s.
Gilbert Linkous Elementary ranked No. 1 in the county
Children need to go less than a mile outside the neighborhood to take classes at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School. It’s the only Montgomery County Public School to be named a National Blue Ribbon School, the highest award given by the U.S. Department of Education. Niche gives it a grade of A, ranking it the best public elementary school in the county. Students in Shenandoah can attend two other well-rated schools: B-plus-graded Blacksburg Middle School and Blacksburg High School, given an A-plus.
Street festivals downtown
Most of Blacksburg’s annual festivals are held a mile away downtown. The town puts many on in the summer when few students are around. For example, Steppin’ Out brings dancers, musicians and artisans to Main Street in early August. There are events in the spring and fall, too; Virginia Tech has organized the International Street Fair annually since the ‘60s. Attendees can experience games, music and food from more than 40 countries on a single day in April.
Bus and the bypass service Shenandoah
Shenandoah residents can easily bike around the neighborhood, but they typically use cars to travel beyond it. The neighborhood connects to the U.S. Route 460 bypass, and drivers can zip along it through the Blacksburg area. Ten miles south of Shenandoah, the bypass connects to Interstate 81. The Blacksburg Transit bus stops in front of the apartments on Patrick Henry Drive. Mainly students use the bus system, which routes from the neighborhood to the Virginia Tech campus.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
