Quiet streets are surrounded by dense foliage in Blackstone.
The Blackstone community sits on the Massachusetts state line
Blackstone offers both suburban and rural living along the Massachusetts state line. The Blackstone River lends its name to area landmarks, in addition to the community itself, and helped the area become an industrial hub in the 19th century. Blackstone’s flourishing textile mills have evolved into a small town-center around the river, but much of the community maintains its rural feel. Homebuyers can find breathing room in the New England countryside, but still live within commuting distance of Worcester and Providence ; both cities are 30 miles or less from central Blackstone, and Woonsocket is just across the state line in Rhode Island.
Suburban and rural New England housing
Established subdivisions sit closer to the state line and town center, with the landscape becoming more rural farther away from the Rhode Island border. Homes sit on tree-lined streets in southern Blackstone, with yards and sidewalks fronting the properties. Some houses on large lots sit along country roads farther north. Colonial-style homes, Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and farmhouses are common. “The right to farm is important for people,” says Tony Mallozzi, a broker and owner of Anthony Joseph Real Estate. “Almost all the properties have more than an acre; a few acres is the average.” Single-family prices typically range from about $350,000 up to about $700,000, though larger homes and lots can approach $900,000.

Blackstone is central to Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut
With Blackstone’s spot along the boundary between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, highways link commuters to cities in both states. "The location is ideal for young professionals working in both Providence and Worcester," says Christine Molla, a broker and owner of Costello Realty. Providence is about 20 miles south via Rhode Island state Route 146, and Worcester sits less than 30 miles northwest. Boston is almost 50 miles away. “The reason people love Blackstone is the corridor of Route 146,” Mallozzi says. The Forge Park/495 MBTA station is about 10 miles from central Blackstone. Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is just south of Providence.
Recreation in and around the Blackstone Gorge
Rocky cliffs overlook the Blackstone River at Blackstone Gorge, which lies close to the Rhode Island state line. Wooded trails await hikers, while anglers can fish from the scenic spot and kayakers paddle in the river. The Blackstone River Greenway is set to eventually run through many towns between Worcester and Providence; some sections are open, but it is an ongoing project and there is no projected completion date at this time. Outdoor enthusiasts often form teams to take on the Greenway Challenge, a modified triathlon spanning three states and more than 50 miles of paddling, biking and running through the Blackstone River Valley. The Southern New England Trunkline Trail, or SNETT, passes through Blackstone as part of a 22-mile recreational path. Just across the state line, Woonsocket’s World War II Veterans Memorial State Park has sports facilities, a splash pad and walking paths. Other green spaces and amenities in Blackstone include: • Attilio Valati Nature Park, with trails and waterside benches • Turbesi Park, which offers a basketball court, playground and two ballfields • Harris Pond, popular for fishing • Hop Brook Preserve, with a hiking trail • New England Country Club, a public 18-hole golf course
Bikers can also ride trails near Turbesi Park in Blackstone.
The Blackstone River Greenway also offers benches for relaxing or reading.

Restaurants in the Blackstone town center
Dining options in Blackstone are limited, but the area’s few restaurants sit near the river and state line. “This little mill town is having a little resurrection and rebirth with stores and restaurants,” Mallozzi says. “It’s starting to come alive.” Walkers Pub patrons can shoot pool, cue up tunes on the jukebox or catch a game on TV. Goodstuff Smokehouse serves up barbecue nearby. TKO Pizza offers up subs and salads with their trademark pizzas. Across the state line, Woonsocket has more spots like Savini’s Pomodoro, which serves Italian fare, and the Krakow Deli Bakery Smokehouse. Back in Blackstone, Stop & Shop is located on Pulaski Boulevard, while more options sit about 20 miles north. “A lot of people will go back to Millbury to the Shops at Blackstone Valley,” Mallozzi says. “That’s huge there. It’s great for retail. There are Targets, Best Buys – it’s awesome. It’s a great shopping plaza on that 146 corridor.”
Wild animals and train rides in southern Massachusetts
Southwick’s Zoo is a seasonal spot just west of Blackstone, where visitors can see animals like giraffes, rhinos and lions. During the holidays, its Winter Wonderland event is a holiday light display with Santa appearances, train rides and a variety of shows. The Woonsocket Depot hosts the Blackstone Valley Polar Express every winter, when train rides take families through a North Pole-themed trip. “That’s really cute,” Mallozzi says. “Kids ride and go see Santa. It’s tough to get tickets to.”
