The homes of Mendon
Many of Mendon’s new homes are sprouting as part of new subdivisions, full of new traditional craftsman and colonial-style houses on lots that can stretch more than an acre, with most having at least an acre. Big yards are common around town, regardless of the construction era. “Mendon is very rural,” Donati says. These well-manicured lawns sometimes line slim country roads, heavily shaded by mature trees. Considering Mendon is the second-oldest town in Worcester County, some of the homes here date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. That being said, a portion of homes were constructed over the course of the 20th century. Prices for homes in the community range from $350,000 to $700,000 depending on size and condition, while those on significantly larger acreage can reach up to $1 million.
Breakfast at Muffin House Café
A day out and about can begin with a latte from Muffin House Café before grocery shopping at Shaw’s, located a few miles north. Residents can also take advantage of local boutiques and stores along Hastings Street, like The Blessing Barn Bookstore and The Blessing Barn Home Store, known for its unique second-hand finds. After a full day, a sit-down dinner can be had at Alicante Restaurant & Lounge. “It’s very, very popular,” says Donati. The local favorite is known for its short ribs and views of a neighboring pond.
The Annual Mendonfest
A staple of the community is the Mendonfest, an annual event to celebrate the neighborhood’s long history. Those in attendance get to enjoy live performances from local bands, various vendors, and a fireworks show at the end of the night. During the holiday season, residents flock to the town center for the Mendon Annual Santa Parade and Tree Lighting. The little ones get to catch sightings of Santa in the parade, which runs from Northbridge Road to Main Street, before getting to see the big tree get lit up.
